Abstract
The student press is almost always involved in the pulse of the nation's struggle. Since the Dutch colonial era, until the 1998 Reformation era and has taken the role of an alternative until today. The presence of groupthink has become the background for all thoughts of members of the Jakarta Student Press Forum (FPMJ) in the decision-making process. This research has formulated the problem of how the symptoms of groupthink that occur in groupthink group communication occur in the Jakarta Student Press Forum (FPMJ) group communication based on 8 symptoms in the Groupthink theory. The main purpose of this research is to determine the symptoms of groupthink that appear in FPMJ members in making decisions and see the resulting impact. The Groupthink theory from Irving L. Janis is one of the references in this research to see how groupthink symptoms are in communication and the impact that is generated in a group using the approach qualitative through descriptive qualitative methods and using the post-positivisme paradigm as a perspective. The method used is in-depth interviews, observation, documentation and literature study to obtain information to support this research. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that of the 8 (eight) groupthink symptoms there were 5 symptoms that appeared, 3 symptoms that did not appear in any decision-making process in the Jakarta Student Press Forum (FPMJ). The symptoms that appear are: Illusion of immunity, belief in morality attached to the group, collective rationalization, guardian of the self-appointed mind. Then the next symptoms that do not appear / do not appear in influencing the decision-making process in this forum: stereetypes outside the group, self-censorship, direct pressure on dissidents and the last are symptoms that appear but are weak in influencing the decision-making process, which are symptoms of the illusion of unanimity. This study also reveals that the groupthink theory on this group bring positive things for the sustainability of the group.
