Abstract

Currently at the same time, there are four different generations who live side by side, among them the baby boomers and Y generation who currently meet, interact and work together in an organization. Differences in the generation in the organization is considered to be a problem because it is considered to often lead to conflicts caused by differences in characteristics, both in terms of communication behavior and interaction. Coupled with the differences in ethnicity and culture of each employee. As a large public company and has a name nationally and internationally, PT ANTAM Tbk has the most valuable asset of human resources with its diversity in terms of age, gender, background and education level as well as ethnic and cultural background. This research uses qualitative approach. The paradigm used is constructivist paradigm with case study research method. Interviews were conducted with informants consisting of baby boomers and Y generation employees, and also participant observation. The results of this study describe of how communication is applied by baby boomers and Y generation employees in formal situations, in informal situations, what are the communication barriers and how to address the different characteristics. Thus the researcher was able to get a picture of the communication applied by the baby boomers and Y generation employees at PT ANTAM Tbk. The researcher concludes that there are no communication conflicts caused by the difference in the generation that can hamper the productivity of employees in the work, which in turn can affect and hamper the achievement of corporate goals. Keywords: Communication, Baby Boomers Generation, Y Generation Saat ini di waktu yang bersamaan, terdapat empat generasi yang berbeda yang hidup saling berdampingan, di antaranya adalah generasi baby boomers dan generasi Y yang saat ini bertemu, berinteraksi dan bekerja bersama-sama di suatu organisasi. Adanya perbedaan generasi di lingkungan organisasi dianggap telah menjadi suatu masalah karena dianggap sering menyebabkan timbulnya konflik yang disebabkan oleh perbedaan karakteristik, baik dari segi perilaku komunikasi dan interaksinya. Ditambah lagi dengan adanya perbedaan suku dan budaya masing-masing pegawai. Sebagai perusahaan publik yang besar dan telah memiliki nama di kancah nasional dan internasional, PT ANTAM Tbk memiliki aset yang paling berharga yaitu sumber daya manusia dengan keragamannya dari segi usia, gender, latar belakang dan tingkat pendidikan serta latar belakang suku dan budaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Paradigma yang digunakan adalah paradigma konstruktivis dengan metode penelitian studi kasus. Wawancara dilakukan terhadap informan yang terdiri dari pegawai generasi baby boomers dan pegawai generasi Y, serta dilakukan observasi partisipan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menjelaskan bagaimana komunikasi yang dilakukan oleh pegawai generasi baby boomers dan generasi Y dalam situasi formal, dalam situasi informal, apa saja hambatan komunikasinya serta bagaimana menyikapi perbedaan karakteristik tersebut. Dengan demikian peneliti mampu memperoleh gambaran mengenai komunikasi yang dilakukan oleh pegawai generasi baby boomers dan pegawai generasi Y di PT ANTAM Tbk. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa tidak benar adanya perbedaan generasi di PT ANTAM Tbk menyebabkan banyak timbulnya konflik komunikasi yang dapat menghambat produktivitas pegawai di dalam bekerja, yang pada akhirnya dapat berdampak dan menghambat pencapaian tujuan perusahaan.
