Abstract

This study analyzes editorial cartoons from elwecartoon which were published on their Instagram social media for the period 22-27 July 2021. The aim of the research is to reveal representations of social criticism regarding the Covid19 situation in Indonesia through these editorial cartoons. The research method uses Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis to interpret the meaning of signs in cartoons, with the constructivism paradigm as a frame of mind. This research was carried out through the stages of data collection, sign analysis, and interpretation of meaning with reference to the three important components in Peirce's semiotic trichotomy namely Representament, Object, and Interpretant through symbols, political figures, coronavirus-like objects, and other relevant symbols. The results of the analysis that the researchers found show that out of the 4 (four) pieces of the Elwecartoon cartoon, they depict real conditions in society related to handling pandemics, community responses, and government actions related to the causes and effects of this handling through a constructivism paradigm in uncovering the hidden meanings in the cartoon images. . This research is expected to contribute to understanding the use of editorial cartoons as an effective medium for conveying social criticism through social media. This finding also emphasizes the importance of semiotic analysis in expressing meaning in the visual arts and is expected to be a reference for further research in similar fields, as well as expanding understanding of the representation of social criticism in elwecartoon editorial cartoons. Keywords: Editorial Cartoon, Elwecartoon, Covid-19, Instagram, Charles Sanders Peirce’s Semiotics Penelitian ini menganalisis kartun editorial dari elwecartoon yang dipublikasikan pada media sosial Instagramnya pada periode 22-27 Juli 2021. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengungkap representasi kritik sosial terkait situasi Covid19 di Indonesia melalui kartun editorial tersebut. Metode penelitian menggunakan analisis semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce untuk menginterpretasi makna tanda dalam kartun, dengan paradigma konstruktivisme sebagai kerangka pemikiran. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan melalui tahap pengumpulan data, analisis tanda, dan penafsiran makna dengan merujuk pada tiga komponen penting dalam trikotomi semiotika Peirce yaitu Representament, Object, dan Interpretant melalui simbol, tokoh politik, objek mirip coronavirus, dan simbol lainnya yang relevan. Hasil analisis yang peneliti temukan, menunjukan bahwa dari 4 (empat) potongan kartun elwecartoon menggambarkan kondisi nyata dalam masyarakat terkait penanganan pandemi, respon masyarakat, dan tindakan pemerintah terkait sebab-akibat dari penanganan tersebut melalui paradigma konstruktivisme dalam mengungkap makna yang tersembunyi dalam gambar kartun tersebut. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat berkontribusi dalam memahami penggunaan kartun editorial sebagai media efektif dalam menyampaikan kritik sosial melalui media sosial. Temuan ini juga menekankan pentingnya analisis semiotika dalam mengungkapkan makna dalam seni visual dan diharapkan menjadi acuan untuk penelitian lanjutan dalam bidang serupa, serta memperluas pemahaman tentang representasi kritik sosial dalam kartun editorial elwecartoon.
