Abstract
This study examines how members of the hardcore music fan community interpretive the educational meaning of the Educate Yourself column in the 14th edition of Use Your Voice magazine. The column discusses ethical issues surrounding moshpit conduct, violence dance (VD), crowdkilling (CK), and the importance of safe space within the Indonesian hardcore punk scene, presented in the personal opinion essay style characteristic of Do It Yourself (DIY) zine media. This research is grounded in a gap in the literature, which shows that zine studies in Indonesia remain dominated by historical and production-oriented perspectives, while the dimension of active reception by subcultural community audiences has not been widely explored. This study employs a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach and a reception analysis method grounded in Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding theory (1980). This theory identifies three positions of audience meaning-making: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with seven informants, consisting of two internal informants (zine creators) and five external informants (gig audiences), all of whom are active members of the hardcore community with a minimum of three years of involvement and aged 18 to 25. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. This study affirms that the hardcore community constitutes an interpretive community (Fish, 1980; Lindlof, 1988) with a distinctive collective sense-making strategy that shapes how its members decode community media messages. These findings confirm the relevance of Hall's encoding/decoding model within the context of subcultural alternative media, while also contributing to the development of community media studies and subculture research in Indonesia. Keywords: Reception Analysis, Hardcore Community, Zine, Use Your Voice, Stuart Hall, Encoding/Decoding, Alternative Media, Subculture, DIY Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana anggota komunitas penggemar musik hardcore menginterpretasikan makna edukatif dari rubrik Educate Yourself pada majalah Use Your Voice edisi ke-14.
