Abstract

To All The Boys I've Loved Before is a movie that was adapted from a New York Times Best-Selling novel and instead of being an entertainment, this movie experienced a contra at the first of the production, because almost all the production houses refused to maintain the Asian faces as the main characters that in line with the novel. Although in the end there were several production houses that agreed with this condition, the author also looks at the reviews of this movie, that there is a scene where the main character who played and also an Asian is seen watching an anti-Asian racist film in the movie. The author feels the need for further research because seen from the history of American film industry, which is still recorded as committing racism, and they also still believe that Asian faces will not attract the audience to watch. This research was conducted to expose the ideology of racism that being represent in To All The Boys I've Loved Before film, by using a qualitative research method, then analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotics. The results of this study it was found that the racism that appears in this film is a myth, seen from the use of Asian faces as the main characters who are also protagonists that represents in To All The Boys I've Loved Before film. Which this movies is also included in the ranks of Hollywood films, which previously Asian faces were considered unable to sell in the box office.
