Abstract

Winglets are structures that are very important for reducing turbulence in aircraft. The winglet structure that is a Closing Rib Winglet on a CRJ 1000 aircraft has experienced a significant failure. The material type is an aluminum alloy 7475-T7351 consisting of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu which has high strength, superior fracture toughness and is resistant to fatigue crack propagation in the air or extreme environment. To find out more about the causes of this material failure, a failure analysis was carried out in the metallurgical aspects, in the form of micro visual, macro visual, hardness test, SEM, and SEM-EDS chemical composition test. After a failure test, it was found that material failure was caused by fatigue, indicated by fractographic appearance of beach marks which were composed of neat and clear transverse striations with a 500x - 5000x magnification or 50μm - 5 μm size. Looking at fractographic characteristics, this type of fatigue is high cycle fatigue with a time cycle > 106. The average value of hardness and tensile strength is 97.26 (HRB), 756.13 MPa, where the value exceeds the maximum limit of international ASM standards. In its elements composition there are inclusions of elements Sr, Ca and Na> 0.05% which are factors for the formation of porosity. . Keywords: Closing rib, fatigue, fractogrphy, inclusions, SEM-EDS, striations. Winglet merupakan struktur yang sangat penting untuk mengurangi turbulensi pada pesawat. Struktur penyusun winglet yakni Closing Rib Winglet pada pesawat CRJ 1000 telah mengalami kegagalan yang signifikan, Tipe material nya adalah paduan aluminium 7475-T7351 yang terdiri dari Al-Zn-Mg-Cu yang memiliki high strength, superior fracture toughness dan tahan terhadap fatigue crack propagation di udara ataupun lingkungan yang ekstrim. Untuk mengetahui lebih lanjut penyebab kegagalan material ini maka dilakukan analisis kegagalan dalam aspek metalurgi berupa mikro visual, makro visual, uji kekerasan, SEM, dan uji komposisi kimia SEM-EDS.. Setelah dilakukan uji kegagalan material disebabkan oleh kelelahan (fatigue), ditunjukan oleh penampakan fraktografi beach marks yang tersusun dari striasi (striations) yang melintang rapi dan jelas dengan perbesaran 500x – 5000x atau ukuran 50μm - 5 μm. Melihat karakteristik fraktografi, jenis dari fatigue ini adalah high cycle fatigue dengan siklus waktu >106. Nilai rata-rata kekerasan dan tensile strength adalah 97,26 (HRB), 756,13 MPa, dimana nilai tersebut melebihi batas maksimal standar ASM international. Pada komposisi penyusun elemen terdapat inklusi unsur Sr, Ca dan Na > 0.05% yang menjadi faktor terbentuknya porositas.
