Abstract
The significant development of the Indonesian film industry provides numerous opportunities to create unique, authentic, and inclusive perspectives in filmmaking. This serves as the reason for the author to further deliver how broadcasting academics with relevant competencies understand and interpret the concept of the female gaze in "Yuni," directed by Kamila Andini. The perspective in this film utilizes a woman's point of view through narrative and visual elements that depict the perspectives and experiences of a female character named Yuni. The concept of the female gaze is guided by three characteristics: the rejection of objectification, the representation of equality and the efforts to achieve it within diverse contexts of life, and the portrayal of the subjectivity of the female character's experiences and deeper emotional empathy. A qualitative approach using reception analysis, based on Stuart Hall’s theory, was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews with seven broadcasting academics from Mercu Buana University. The findings reveal that the female gaze in Yuni is predominantly received positively regarding the first two characteristics. The third characteristic is accepted but remains subject to negotiation, reflecting diverse interpretations influenced by individual contexts, as per Hall’s theory of encoding and decoding. These results highlight that while there is a general alignment with the female gaze perspective, individual interpretations are influenced by the personal contexts of the respondents. This study offers insights into developing more representative cinematic practices and recommends further research with a broader range of films and audiences. Perkembangan dunia perfilman Indonesia yang signifikan memberi banyak peluang untuk menciptakan variasi perspektif yang unik, autentik, dan inklusif dalam pembuatan film. Hal ini menjadi alasan penulis meneliti lebih lanjut bagaimana para akademisi bidang broadcasting dengan kompetensi terkait memahami dan memaknai konsep female gaze pada film“Yuni” yang rilis pada tahun 2021 dan disutradarai oleh perempuan bernama Kamila Andini. Perspektif yang diadopsi dalam film ini menggunakan sudut pandang wanita melalui naratisi dan visual yang menggambarkan pandangan dan pengalaman karakter utama wanita bernama Yuni. Konsep female gaze sendiri memiliki 3 karakteristik panduan, seperti adanya pandangan objektifikasi dan penolakannya, mempromosikan kesetaraan maupun upayanya, dan penampilan subjektivitas pengalaman maupun emosional karakter wanita yang lebih mendalam. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis resepsi. Data dikumpulkan melalui proses wawancara mendalam oleh 7 informan yang merupakan akademisi di bidang broadcasting dari Universitas Mercu Buana. Hasil penelitian menujukkan bahwa female gaze dalam film Yuni diterima secara positif oleh mayoritas informan pada kedua karakteristik utama dan sisanya pada karakteristik terakhir. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa meskipun terdapat pemahaman dan penerimaan yang baik mengenai perspektif female gaze, interpretasi terhadap perasaan dan pengalaman karakter tetap dipengaruhi oleh konteks individu masing-masing informan. Penelitian ini menawarkan wawasan untuk pengembangan karya yang lebih representatif dan disarankan agar teori penelitian dengan tema terkait dapat dilakukan pada film dan audiens yang lebih luas.
