Abstract
Understanding gender in society is often misunderstood. Gender is often associated with sex, although gender and sex are two different concepts. Sex refers to the physical condition a person possesses, while gender is the distinction between roles, attributes, traits, attitudes, and behaviors that grow and develop within society. This study aims to analyze the representation of gender in the character Juno in the film Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku (Memories of My Body). Films consist of symbols of communication that have meaning semiotically. A film is a system of signs, meaning that there are messages embedded within it. Semiotics is used to analyze the signs in films, particularly iconic signs, to achieve the desired effect. This research uses a semiotic analysis method with a qualitative approach to examine how gender is portrayed and perceived through the character of Juno. The unit of analysis used is the scenes in the film that represent gender dynamics in Juno's character. Data is collected through observation and analyzed using semiotic theory developed by John Fiske, who views signs and codes in media as forms of communication encompassing the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. This film highlights the life journey of Juno, a Lengger dancer, who experiences gender dynamics in society. The Lengger dance, which combines masculine and feminine elements, becomes the focus of the film’s exploration in presenting a complex gender identity. The research findings show that the film portrays Juno’s gender role and expression as being in stark contrast to traditional masculine representations. Juno is depicted more as a male figure with feminine traits, whose identity is shaped by the influence of his surroundings and culture. Padahal, gender dan jenis kelamin adalah dua hal yang berbeda. Jenis kelamin mengacu pada kondisi fisik yang dimiliki seseorang di luar. Sedangkan gender adalah pembedaan antara peran dan atribut, sifat, sikap dan perilaku yang tumbuh dan berkembang dalam masyarakat.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi gender tokoh Juno dalam film Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku. Film terdiri dari lambang-lambang komunikasi, yang secara semiotik mempunyai makna. Film itu sendiri sistem tanda, artinya ada pesan-pesan yang termuat dalam film tersebut. Semiotika digunakan untuk menganalisis tanda-tanda dalam film, khususnya tanda-tanda ikonis, untuk mencapai efek yang diinginkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis semiotika dengan pendekatan kualitatif mengkaji bagaimana gender ditampilkan dan dipersepsikan melalui karakter Juno. Unit analisis yang digunakan adalah scene-scene dalam film yang merepresentasikan dinamika gender pada tokoh Juno. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan dianalisis menggunakan teori semiotika yang dikembangkan oleh John Fiske, yang melihat tanda dan kode dalam media sebagai bentuk komunikasi yang mencakup level realitas, level representasi, dan level ideologi. Film ini menyoroti perjalanan hidup Juno, seorang penari Lengger, yang mengalami dinamika gender di masyarakat. Tarian Lengger yang memadukan unsur maskulin dan feminin menjadi pusat eksplorasi film dalam mempresentasikan identitas gender yang kompleks. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film ini menunjukkan bahwa peran dan ekspresi gender tokoh Juno sangat bertolak belakang dengan representasi maskulin. Juno lebih digambarkan sebagai sosok laki-laki dengan sifat feminim, yang jati dirinya dibentuk oleh pengaruh lingkungan dan budaya di sekitarnya.
