Abstract

Opini publik termasuk dalam kajian teori spiral of silence dimana teori ini menjelaskan bagaimana suatu kelompok minoritas memilih untuk diam karena adanya kelompok mayoritas yang memiliki opini berlawanan yang akan mengisolasi mereka. Masih terbatas penelitian yang mengkaji keberlakuan teori spiral of silence di media sosial Indonesia berkaitan dengan opini publik seputar LGBTQ. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan menjelaskan apakah teori spiral of silence cenderung berlaku di media sosial dalam konteks tentang berita LGBTQ di Piala Dunia 2022 dan bagaimana prediksi keberlakuannya di masa depan. Paradigma penelitian ini adalah post-positivistik dan metode penelitian adalah analisis isi. Data primer diperoleh dari komentar pengguna pada konten berita tentang LGBTQ di Piala Dunia 2022 di Facebook, Instagram, dan Twitter, sedangkan data sekunder dari dokumentasi profil pengguna. Komentar dikategorisasikan sebagai mendukung, menolak, atau netral terhadap LGBTQ. Unit analisis yang digunakan yaitu unit tematik dan teknik analisis data secara statistik- deskriptif. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa dalam konteks yang terbatas, teori spiral of silence cenderung tidak berlaku disebabkan beberapa temuan yang tidak sesuai prinsip dan asumsi teori, yaitu: (1) Kemunculan opini kelompok minoritas (pro LGBTQ) yang cenderung tidak takut dengan kelompok mayoritas (kontra LGBTQ), (2) Ketidaksesuaian dengan opini kelompok mayoritas tidak membuat minoritas bungkam, (3) Kelompok minoritas secara terbuka memperlihatkan identitasnya, (4) Opini cenderung didasarkan pada motivasi internal dan faktor kontekstual, (5) Media berita online tidak membungkam suara minoritas. Realitas opini publik saat ini berpotensi menjadi semakin moderat sehingga dalam konteks yang terbatas, teori spiral of silence cenderung tidak akan berlaku juga di masa depan. Public opinion is included in the study of the spiral of silence theory, which explains how the minority group chooses to remain silent because the majority group has the opposite opinion that will isolate them. Limited research has examined the spiral of silence theory on Indonesian social media related to public opinion about LGBTQ. This research aims to find out and explain whether the spiral of silence theory tends to prevail on social media in the context of LGBTQ news at the World Cup 2022 and how it is predicted to prevail in the future. The research paradigm is post-positivistic and the research method is content analysis. Primary data were obtained from user comments on news content about LGBTQ at the World Cup 2022 on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, while secondary data from user profile documentation. Comments were categorized as supporting, opposing, or neutral towards LGBTQ. The unit of analysis used is the thematic unit and the data analysis technique is statistical-descriptive. The results show that in limited context the spiral of silence theory tends not to prevail due to certain findings that are not in line with the principles and assumptions of the theory, such as: (1) The emergence of minority group opinions (pros LGBTQ) that tend not to be afraid of the majority group (cons LGBTQ), (2) Incongruence with the majority group opinions does not make the minority silent, (3) The minorities publicly show their identity, (4) Opinions tend to be driven by internal motivation and contextual factors, (5) Online news media does not silence minority opinions. The reality of public opinion currently has the potential to become more moderate so in limited context the spiral of silence theory is also not expected to prevail in the future.
