Abstract
Tan Kok Liong Mosque is one of the Islamic worship buildings which the architecture is similar to the Confucian worship building or often called the Temple building. This situation is influenced by Chinese culture, which is the origin culture of Confucianism. This study aimed to find out the people’s visual perception in identifying the architecture of Tan Kok Liong Mosque. This study also aimed to reveal architectural elements that are perceived as Chinese culture architectural elements and mosque architectural elements. This method used are mixed-method. The descriptive qualitative method used to find out the architectural elements which influenced the people’s perception by doing field observation and data recording. The qualitative method used to obtain the people’s visual perception towards Tan Kok Liong mosque. The results of this study indicated that the Tan Kok Liong Mosque is recognized as a Islamic worship building (mosque) with Chinesse-style architecture by most of the respondents. The small dome-like element on the roof top of the entrance canopy was perceived as mosque identity. Meanwhile the roof of the Tan Kok Liong mosque was perceived as chinesse-style architecture Keywords: culture, architecture, mosque, visual perception. Masjid Tan Kok Liong adalah salah satu bangunan ibadah Umat Islam yang arsitekturnya mirip dengan bangunan ibadah umat yang beragama Konghucu atau sering disebut dengan bangunan Klenteng. Hal ini disebabkan karena adanya pengaruh kebudayaan China, yaitu kebudayaan asal dari agama Konghucu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi visual masyarakat terhadap identitas arstiektur Masjid Tan Kok Liong . Penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengungkap elemen-elemen arsitektur yang dipersepsi sebagai elemen yang mencerminkan kebudayaan China dan elemen yang mencerminkan elemen masjid. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif untuk mengungkap elemen mana saja yang mempengaruhi persepsi visual masyarakat dari hasil pengamatan lapangan, metode kuantitatif juga digunakan untuk memperoleh persepsi visual masyarakat terhadap objek studi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Masjid Tan Kok Liong dikenali sebagai masjid dengan arsitektur kebudayaan China oleh sebagian besar responden. Adanya elemen kubah kecil yang ditempatkan di bagian depan masjid yang dipersepsikan sebagai identitas masjid. Sedangkan bentuk atap dari Masjid Tan Kok Liong sendiri dipersepsikan sebagai kebudayaan arsitektur China Kata Kunci : kebudayaan, arsitektur, masjid, persepsi visual
