Abstract
Mercu Buana University is one of the private universities in DKI Jakarta whose students come from various regions in Indonesia, including from Eastern Indonesia. When students migrate to continue their education at Mercu Buana University, they experience a culture shock because of the cultural differences or habits that are here. In addition, overseas students from Eastern Indonesia also have obstacles when communicating with people from other regions, where they still carry the culture or habits of their respective regions. When overseas students from Eastern Indonesia communicate with people from Jakarta and from other regions, this will encourage intercultural communication. According to Liliweri, intercultural communication is the exchange of messages conveyed orally, in writing and even imaginary between two people with different cultural backgrounds. The paradigm used in this study is the constructivism paradigm and the method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method. The primary data collection technique is done by interviewing one key informant and four informants. The results of this study are overseas students from Eastern Indonesia experiencing a culture shock that is different from one another, but they have the same obstacles in the application of intercultural communication, that is speaking in their respective dialects and speaking at a fast tempo. Overseas students from Eastern Indonesia can adapt to adjust to the culture or habits that exist here, as well as to internalize the culture here into their personalities.
