Abstract
This research examines three covers of Tempo magazine that is edition of 25th February 2018, 4th March 2018, and 22th April 2018. The purpose of this research is to uncover the meaning behind the three covers of Tempo magazine. Next, the researcher wants to find the power of relation on the three covers. In this research, researchers used qualitative research methods with critical paradigms. The theory that the researchers used was Roland Barthes's semiotics to reveal the meaning behind the three covers of Tempo magazine. Then, the theory of power according to Paul-Michel Foucault and Political Economy of the Media from Vincent Mosco helped researchers to uncover the power relations and aspects of the political economy of the media through the three covers. From this research, the researcher found that the caricatures and symbols that appeared on the three covers of Tempo magazine revealed very strong power relations between the caricature of political figures and support parties. Through the caricatures and symbols, plus historical aspects, Tempo produces knowledge to the community to be believed as a truth so that it can make choices on certain candidates. Keywords: Semiotics, Power, Foucault, Historicity, Electability Penelitian ini mengkaji tiga sampul majalah Tempo yakni edisi 25 Februari 2018, 4 Maret 2018, dan 22 April 2018. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengungkap makna di balik tiga sampul majalah Tempo tersebut. Selanjutnya, peneliti ingin menemukan relasi kuasa pada tiga sampul tersebut. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan paradiga kritis. Teori yang peneliti gunakan adalah semiotika Roland Barthes untuk mengungkap makna dibalik tiga sampul majalah Tempo. Kemudian, teori kekuasaan menurut Paul-Michel Foucault dan Ekonomi Politik Media dari Vincent Mosco membantu peneliti untuk mengungkap relasi kuasa serta aspek ekonomi politik media melalui tiga sampul tersebut. Dari penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan bahwa karikatur dan simbol-simbol yang muncul pada tiga sampul majalah Tempo mengungkap relasi kuasa yang sangat kuat antara para tokoh politik yang dikarikaturkan dan partai-partai pendukung. Melalui karikatur dan simbol-simbol tersebut, ditambah aspek historistias, Tempo memproduksi pengetahuan kepada masyarakat untuk diyakini sebagai sebuah kebenaran sehingga dapat menjatuhkan pilihan pada calon tertentu.
