Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mise en scene meaning in conveying dramatic messages in the serial drama Light Shop Episode 8. The focus of the research is on how visual elements such as spatial arrangement, costume, color, lighting, actor expression, props, and shot composition function as signs that construct emotional and narrative meaning within the drama. This research employs a qualitative approach using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic analysis, which interprets meaning through the relationship between sign, object, and interpretant, as well as the classification of signs into Qualisign, sinsign, and legisign. The object of this study consists of 14 selected scenes chosen purposively based on their dramatic intensity and relevance to themes of life, death, guilt, memory, and existential choice. Data were collected through visual observation, scene documentation, and dialogue analysis. The findings indicate that mise en scene plays a crucial role in delivering dramatic messages through consistent visual symbolism, particularly in representing the liminal space between life and death. Elements such as lamps, costume colors, lighting design, spatial settings, and character gestures function as symbolic markers of hope, emotional attachment, repentance, and personal choice. The lamp shop, in particular, operates as a central visual metaphor that signifies both life opportunity and existential decision. This study concludes that mise en scene in Light Shop Episode 8 does not merely serve an aesthetic purpose, but functions as a primary narrative device that conveys complex emotional and philosophical messages implicitly. Through Peircean semiotic analysis, the study demonstrates how visual signs systematically guide audience interpretation and deepen the dramatic meaning of the story. Keywords: mise en scene, semiotics, Light Shop, serial drama, visual meaning Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pemaknaan mise en scene dalam penyampaian pesan drama pada serial Light Shop Episode 8. Fokus penelitian diarahkan pada bagaimana unsur-unsur visual seperti penataan ruang, kostum, warna, ekspresi aktor, properti, serta komposisi gambar digunakan sebagai tanda untuk membangun makna dramatik dan emosional dalam narasi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan analisis semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce, yang memaknai tanda melalui hubungan sign, object, dan interpretant, serta pengelompokan tanda ke dalam Qualisign, sinsign, dan legisign. Objek penelitian terdiri dari 14 adegan yang dipilih secara purposif berdasarkan intensitas dramatik dan relevansinya terhadap tema kehidupan, kematian, penyesalan, dan pilihan eksistensial. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi visual, dokumentasi adegan, dan analisis dialog. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mise en scene berperan penting dalam membangun pesan drama melalui simbolisasi visual yang konsisten, terutama dalam merepresentasikan ruang antara hidup dan mati. Elemen seperti lampu, warna kostum, pencahayaan, dan gestur tokoh berfungsi sebagai penanda pilihan hidup, harapan, dan keterikatan emosional antartokoh. Kesimpulan penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa mise en scene tidak hanya berfungsi estetis, tetapi juga menjadi medium utama dalam menyampaikan pesan naratif dan emosional secara implisit kepada penonton.
