Abstract
This study employed a quantitative research design to examine the relationship between workload and burnout among employees in the retail sector in Jakarta. A total of 204 retail employees who were domiciled in Jakarta and had a minimum tenure of six months participated in this study. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling technique.Data were collected through selfadministered questionnaires. The validity of the measurement instruments was assessed through expert judgment, in which each instrument was evaluated by two experts. The results of the content validity index showed that the workload instrument obtained a validity index of 0.72, while the burnout instrument obtained a validity index of 0.79.Item reliability testing was conducted using SPSS, and the results indicated that both the workload and burnout instruments demonstrated acceptable reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha values greater than 0.60. The data analysis technique used to test the research hypothesis was Spearman’s rank-order correlation.The results revealed a significant and positive relationship between workload and burnout among retail employees in Jakarta (p < 0.05), indicating that higher levels of workload are associated with higher levels of burnout. All dimensions of workload—namely time load, mental effort load, and psychological stress load—showed significant positive relationships with all dimensions of burnout, including exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive impairment, and emotional impairment.The correlation coefficients ranged from very weak to strong (r = 0.213 to r = 0.755), with the strongest relationship observed between the exhaustion dimension and time load. Furthermore, the results of the difference test indicated that length of employment was the only demographic characteristic that significantly differentiated levels of workload and burnout Keywords: workload, burnout, retail employees, Jakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian kuantitatif untuk mengkaji hubungan antara workload dan burnout pada karyawan sektor retail di Jakarta. Sebanyak 204 karyawan retail yang berdomisili di Jakarta dan memiliki masa kerja minimal enam bulan berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Penentuan sampel dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik convenience sampling.Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner yang diisi secara mandiri oleh responden. Validitas alat ukur ditentukan melalui expert judgement, di mana masing-masing alat ukur dinilai oleh dua orang ahli. Hasil perhitungan indeks validitas menunjukkan bahwa alat ukur workload memiliki nilai sebesar 0,72, sedangkan alat ukur burnout memiliki nilai sebesar 0,79.Uji reliabilitas dilakukan menggunakan program SPSS dan menunjukkan bahwa kedua alat ukur, baik workload maupun burnout, memiliki nilai Cronbach’s alpha > 0,60, sehingga dinyatakan reliabel. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan untuk menguji hipotesis penelitian adalah korelasi Spearman.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan dan positif antara workload dan burnout pada karyawan sektor retail di Jakarta (p < 0,05). Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi workload yang dimiliki karyawan, maka semakin tinggi pula tingkat burnout yang dirasakan. Seluruh dimensi workload, yaitu time load, mental effort load, dan psychological stress load, memiliki hubungan yang positif dan signifikan dengan seluruh dimensi burnout, yang meliputi exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive impairment, dan emotional impairment.Nilai koefisien korelasi menunjukkan kekuatan hubungan yang bervariasi, mulai dari sangat lemah hingga kuat (r = 0,213 hingga r = 0,755), dengan hubungan terkuat terdapat pada dimensi time load dan exhaustion. Selain itu, hasil uji beda menunjukkan bahwa lama bekerja merupakan satu-satunya karakteristik demografis yang secara signifikan membedakan tingkat workload dan burnout pada karyawan.
