Abstract
Instagram social media usage among university students is expanding rapidly and delivering psychological impacts, both positive and negative, particularly through the mechanism of social comparison. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social comparison and academic anxiety among university students who use Instagram in Jakarta. Social comparison is a self-evaluation process of comparing one's abilities and opinions with others, while academic anxiety refers to anxiety arising within an academic context. The variables studied were social comparison, measured using the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM), and academic anxiety, measured using the Academic Anxiety Scale. The research sample consisted of 170 Instagram-using students selected through accidental sampling. The data analysis method employed was Spearman correlation analysis to test the relationship between the two variables. The research results indicated a significant positive relationship between social comparison and academic anxiety among university students who use Instagram in Jakarta. In the social comparison dimension, the ability dimension showed a stronger correlation with academic anxiety compared to the opinion dimension, indicating that academic ability comparison plays a crucial role in increasing academic anxiety. In conclusion, the higher the tendency for social comparison, the higher the level of academic anxiety experienced by students. Keywords: Social Comparison, Academic Anxiety, University Students, Instagram Penggunaan media sosial Instagram di kalangan mahasiswa berkembang pesat dan memberikan dampak psikologis, baik positif maupun negatif, khususnya melalui mekanisme social comparison. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara social comparison dengan academic anxiety pada mahasiswa pengguna Instagram di Jakarta. Social comparison merupakan proses evaluasi diri dengan membandingkan kemampuan dan pendapat diri dengan orang lain, sementara academic anxiety merujuk pada kecemasan yang muncul dalam konteks akademik. Variabel yang diteliti adalah social comparison yang diukur menggunakan Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) dan academic anxiety yang diukur menggunakan Academic Anxiety Scale. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 170 mahasiswa pengguna Instagram yang dipilih menggunakan teknik accidental sampling. Metode analisis data yang digunakan adalah analisis korelasi Spearman untuk menguji hubungan antara kedua variabel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan positif yang signifikan antara social comparison dengan academic anxiety pada mahasiswa pengguna Instagram di Jakarta. Pada dimensi social comparison, dimensi ability menunjukkan hubungan yang lebih kuat dengan academic anxiety dibandingkan dimensi opinion, yang mengindikasikan bahwa perbandingan kemampuan akademik berperan penting dalam meningkatkan kecemasan akademik. Kesimpulannya, semakin tinggi kecenderungan social comparison, maka semakin tinggi pula tingkat academic anxiety yang dirasakan mahasiswa.
