Abstract
The sandwich generation phenomenon has become an increasingly relevant social issue amid economic instability and growing family expectations toward younger generations, particularly Generation Z. This issue is frequently represented in films, including Home Sweet Loan, which portrays financial pressure, family conflict, and moral dilemmas experienced by the main character. This study aims to examine how Generation Z interprets the representation of the sandwich generation in Home Sweet Loan. The research employs a qualitative approach using reception analysis based on Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding theory. Primary data were collected through semi structured indepth interviews with nine Generation Z informants who had watched the film. The findings reveal that audience interpretations fall into three reception positions: dominant hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. Informants in the dominant position tend to accept the character’s sacrifices as a natural form of family responsibility. Those in the negotiated position acknowledge the value of familial responsibility while critically reflecting on its impact on individual wellbeing. Meanwhile, oppositional informants perceive the film as potentially normalizing structural pressure on younger generations. This study concludes that personal experiences, social class background, and family economic conditions significantly influence how Generation Z interprets the sandwich generation issue presented in the film.
