Abstract

This research explores the representation of schizophrenia in Mr. Robot using John Fiske’ semiotic approach, focusing on cinematography used to convey the meaning about mental health. Elliot Alderson, portrayed as a genius hacker with schizophrenia, has his psychological condition depicted not only through narration but also through complex visual technical signs. Technical aspects such as narrow frames, expansive negative space, and cold color grading serve as symbols of the mental pressure and distortion of reality experienced by Elliot. The research used descriptive qualitative with John Fiske's semiotic analysis, which has stages of reality, representation, and ideology. In the reality stage, mise en scene and expression are interpreted as Elliot's isolation and alienation. In the representation stage, the use of technical aspects such as camera framing, lighting, and editing creates deep psychological meaning. In the ideology stage, mental illness is not only seen as an individual illness, but also as a catalyst against capitalism that oppresses society. The results of the study show that the film Mr. Robot provides information related to mental illness in a symbolic, communicative, and aesthetic manner through unusual cinematography. Elliot's representation of schizophrenia invites viewers to be aware of mental illness, while also sparking empathy for those who suffer from it. This study confirms that popular media has an important role in sparking public awareness of mental illness through attractive visuals. Keywords: Representation, Semiotic, Cinematography, Mr. Robot, Schizophrenia Penelitian ini menggali representasi skizofrenia pada film Mr. Robot dengan pendekatan semiotika John Fiske, dengan fokus penelitian pada aspek sinematografi yang digunakan untuk memberikan makna tentang kesehatan mental. Elliot Alderson, diceritakan sebagai seorang hacker jenius yang mengidap skizofrenia, di mana kondisi psikisnya tidak hanya digambarkan melalui narasi, tetapi juga melalui tanda teknis visual yang kompleks. Aspek teknis seperti frame sempit, negative space yang luas, hingga color grading dingin berguna sebagai simbol tekanan mental dan distorsi realitas yang dialami Elliot. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan analisis semiotika John Fiske yang memiliki tahapan realitas, representasi, dan ideologi. Pada tahap realitas, mise en scene dan ekspresi dimaknai isolasi dan keterasingan Elliot. Dalam tahap representasi, penggunaan aspek teknis seperti framing kamera, pencahayaan, hingga editing menciptakan makna psikologis yang dalam. Dalam tahap ideologi, penyakit mental bukan hanya sebagai penyakit individu, tetapi juga sebagai pemantik melawan kapitalisme yang menekan masyarakat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film Mr. Robot memberikan informasi terkait penyakit mental dengan simbolis, komunikatif, dan estetis melalui sinematografi yang tidak biasa. Representasi skizofrenia oleh Elliot mengajak penonton untuk aware terhadap penyakit mental, sekaligus pemantik empati pada penderitanya. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa media populer memiliki peran yang penting dalam memantik kesadaran publik terkait penyakit mental melalui visual yang menarik.
