Abstract
Inclusive learning in higher education requires adaptive communication to optimally accommodate the needs of students with disabilities. Adaptive communication is a crucial element in creating equitable, effective, and just learning interactions. This study aims to analyze the forms, patterns, and strategies of adaptive communication implemented by lecturers in inclusive learning for students with disabilities at Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) and Universidade da Paz (UNPAZ) in Timor-Leste. Grounded in Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), this research explores the processes of communicative convergence and divergence employed by lecturers in responding to the diverse needs of students with visual, hearing, mobility, and learning impairments. The study adopts a post-positivist paradigm with a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of three lecturers and four students with disabilities from both universities as research informants. The research was conducted at UNTL and UNPAZ in Dili City, Timor-Leste. The findings indicate that lecturers at UNTL and UNPAZ have implemented various forms of adaptive communication, both verbal and nonverbal, through adjustments in language use, speaking pace, the use of supporting media, and empathetic interpersonal approaches. Convergent communication patterns were more dominantly applied to enhance students’ understanding, comfort, and participation, while divergent patterns emerged in certain situations to maintain academic authority. Such adaptive communication contributes positively to the creation of an inclusive learning environment, although limitations remain in terms of facilities and institutional policies. This study concludes that adaptive communication plays a strategic role in supporting the success of inclusive learning in higher education. Therefore, strengthening lecturers’ competencies as well as developing supportive policies and facilities are necessary to enhance inclusive learning practices for students with disabilities. Keywords: Adaptive Communication, Inclusive Learning, Students with Disabilities, CAT, UNTL, UNPAZ.
