Abstract

Social media platforms design elements, such as personalized algorithms and infinite scroll features providing an endless stream of curated content which also contribute to repetitive, automatic, and purposeless scrolling behavior. This behavior can lead to increase the susceptibility of absent-minded scrolling behavior, especially for young adults that often serves social media platforms as a means of escapism or distraction from emotional experiences. This study aims to explores the relationship between difficulties in emotion regulation and absentminded scrolling in young adults. The research employed a quantitative correlational design with a total of 108 participant aged 18-25 were selected through purposive sampling. Absent-minded scrolling was measured using the Absent-Minded Use Subscale (SUQ-A) developed by Marty-Dugas (2018) and modified by Eid (2022), while Difficulties in Emotion Regulation was measured using the Difficulties in emotion regulation scale–short form (DERS-SF) developed by Kaufman et al. (2016) and adapted by Danasasmita et al. (2024). The Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated a significant positive correlation between difficulties in emotion regulation and absent-minded scrolling (r = 0.369, p < 0.01). These findings indicate that higher levels of difficulties in emotion regulation are associated with increased tendencies to engage in absent-minded scrolling. Specifically, difficulties in emotional clarity and accepting negative emotional states play a crucial role. Although the relationship was significant, the moderate strength of the correlation indicates that emotion dysregulation is not the sole factor influencing absent-minded scrolling, suggesting the involvement of other psychological factors. Therefore, difficulties in emotion regulation should be carefully considered in understanding and addressing absent-minded scrolling behaviors among young adults. Keywords: Absent-minded Scrolling, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation, Young Adults, Social Media.
