Abstract
This research explore how Generation Z interprets Taylor Swift’s song The Archer as a medium for expressing anxiety. In contemporary context, music functions not only as entertainment but also as an emotional channel that reflects personal and psychological experiences. The Archer presents themes of insecurity, fear of abandonment, and emotional vulnerability that resonate with the mental and emotional landscape of Generation Z. The study aims to analyze how the message in The Archer is received using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding theory, identify audience reception (dominanthegemonic, negotiated, oppositional), and examine the extent to which the song may function as a form of emotional communication related to anxiety. This research uses a qualitative reception analysis approach with semistructured interviews conducted with seven Generation Z participants aged 16 – 24. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. Findings indicate that interpretations of the song vary widely depending on personal experiences, emotional background, and individual meaning-making processes. The study concludes that The Archer has the potential to serve as an emotional communication medium for listeners, as well as an alternative way for Generation Z to express and process experiences related to mental health, particularly anxiety. Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana Generasi Z menerima pesan dalam lagu The Archer karya Taylor Swift sebagai medium untuk mengekspresikan gangguan kecemasan. Pada konteks saat ini, musik tidak hanya berperan sebagai hiburan, namun juga sebagai sarana komunikasi emosional yang dapat mewakilkan pengalaman psikologis pendengarnya. The Archer memiliki pesan mengenai kerentanan, rasa takut ditinggalkan, dan penerimaan diri yang sejalan dengan kondisi emosional Generasi Z. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis bagaimana pesan dalam lagu The Archer diterima menggunakan teori encoding/decoding Stuart Hall, menelaah posisi penerimaan pesan (dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, oppositional), serta melihat peran lagu sebagai sarana komunikasi emosional terkait kecemasan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah analisis resepsi dengan pendekatan kualitatif melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur kepada tujuh informan Generasi Z berusia 16 – 24 tahun. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan model analisis interaktif Miles dan Huberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerimaan pesan lagu ini bervariasi, dipengaruhi oleh pengalaman personal, kondisi emosional, serta pemahaman masing – masing pendengar. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa The Archer dapat berperan sebagai ruang komunikasi emosional dan medium alternatif untuk mengekspresikan isu kesehatan mental, khususnya gangguan kecemasan.
