Abstract
Amid ongoing social change and modernization, the Ende community continues to preserve the Belis tradition as an essential component of the traditional wedding process. Beyond the exchange of goods, Belis functions as a cultural communication practice where families interact, negotiate, and affirm kinship ties. This study aims to explore the communication process and challenges surrounding the implementation of Belis in Ende Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through direct observation of traditional ceremonies and interviews with traditional leaders, families of the bride and groom, and local community members. The findings show that communication between families unfolds gradually through each procession, including Mbe’o Nia, Wa’u Sodho, Mukumuku, and Mendhi Belanja. Traditional leaders serve as mediators who guide the process, ensure clarity of meaning, and safeguard adherence to customary values. Despite its importance, Belis faces several modern challenges, particularly economic pressures, generational differences in interpreting customary values, and the simplification of rituals. Younger generations tend to prefer more flexible forms of Belis, while traditional families strive to preserve its sacred symbolism. Therefore, balanced adaptation is required to ensure the continuity of the Belis tradition without diminishing its essential meaning as a form of cultural communication within the Ende community.
