Abstract
Digital social anxiety has emerged as a prominent psychosocial phenomenon alongside the increasing use of social media among postgraduate students. This study aims to explore the subjective meanings of students’ experiences in facing digital social anxiety related to Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Fear of Better Options (FoBO). Using a qualitative approach with Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological method, this research examines the social motives and typifications that shape such experiences. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six postgraduate students of the Master’s Program in Communication Science at Universitas Mercu Buana who are active social media users. The findings reveal that FoMO and FoBO are closely associated with the pressure to remain constantly connected, tendencies to compare oneself in digital spaces, and decision-making dilemmas in both academic and personal domains. Two categories of social motives were identified: because motives (driven by past experiences) and in order to motives (goals to be achieved through digital interaction). The analysis indicates that in order to motives are more dominant, as most informants deliberately act to build self-image, maintain digital presence, and establish social connections. The FoMO typifications found include: Social Presence Seekers, Digital Reputation Maintainers, and Exclusion-Sensitive Individuals. The FoBO typifications comprise: Reflective Perfectionists, Regret Avoiders, and Selective Rationalists. The combined FoMO–FoBO typifications consist of: Relational Perfectionists, Reflective Exhibitors, and Sensitive & RegretAvoiding Individuals. These findings broaden the understanding of the dynamics of digital social anxiety among postgraduate students and offer practical implications for educational institutions and academic counselors in assisting students to manage digital social pressures adaptively. Keywords: digital social anxiety, Fear of Missing Out, Fear of Better Options, phenomenology, social motives, typifications Kecemasan sosial digital merupakan fenomena psikososial yang semakin menonjol seiring meningkatnya penggunaan media sosial di kalangan mahasiswa pascasarjana. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplorasi makna subjektif pengalaman mahasiswa dalam menghadapi kecemasan sosial digital yang berkaitan dengan Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) dan Fear of Better Options (FoBO). Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi Alfred Schutz, penelitian ini menelaah motif sosial dan tipifikasi yang membentuk pengalaman tersebut. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap enam mahasiswa Magister Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Mercu Buana yang aktif menggunakan media sosial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa FoMO dan FoBO berkaitan dengan tekanan untuk selalu terkoneksi, kecenderungan membandingkan diri di ruang digital, serta dilema pengambilan keputusan di ranah akademik maupun personal. Dua kategori motif sosial ditemukan, yaitu because motive (dorongan berdasarkan pengalaman masa lalu) dan in order to motive (tujuan yang ingin dicapai melalui interaksi digital). Analisis menunjukkan bahwa in order to motive lebih dominan, karena sebagian besar tindakan informan secara sadar diarahkan untuk membangun citra diri, mempertahankan eksistensi, dan menjalin koneksi sosial. Tipifikasi FoMO meliputi: Pencari Kehadiran Sosial, Penjaga Reputasi Digital, dan Sensitif terhadap Eksklusi. Tipifikasi FoBO mencakup: Perfeksionis Reflektif, Penghindar Penyesalan, dan Rasional Selektif. Tipifikasi gabungan FoMO–FoBO terdiri dari: Relasional Perfeksionis, Eksistensi Reflektif, serta Sensitif & Penghindar Penyesalan. Temuan ini memperluas pemahaman mengenai dinamika kecemasan sosial digital pada mahasiswa pascasarjana dan memberikan implikasi praktis bagi institusi pendidikan serta konselor akademik dalam membantu mahasiswa mengelola tekanan sosial digital secara adaptif.
