Abstract
This study examines the intercultural adaptation process among underage couples married in Jakarta. The research focuses on how these young couples face cultural differences involving ethnicity, family norms, and gender expectations within the context of early marriage. The main concepts used are Berry’s acculturation theory and Oberg’s stages of culture shock to understand the dynamics of cultural adaptation. This study employs a qualitative approach with observations and in-depth interviews conducted with underage married couples. The findings reveal that the adaptation process occurs through stages of recognizing cultural differences, confronting conflicts, negotiating solutions, and achieving cultural value integration. Adaptation strategies applied include cultural compromise, role flexibility, and support from family and the surrounding environment. In conclusion, although early marriage triggers culture shock and complex cultural challenges, the adaptation process can lead to successful cultural integration and the growth of the couples’ social and personal identities.
