Abstract

The Childfree by Choice phenomenon has emerged as a topic of public debate, particularly among Generation Z, who tend to be more open to alternative lifestyle choices. The episode “Titik Temu: Childfree by Choice” on the YouTube channel Menjadi Manusia has sparked widespread discussion. This study aims to understand how Generation Z interprets the content of the video. This research refers to six previous studies and employs relevant concepts and theories in communication, such as Digital Communication, EncodingDecoding Theory, Reception Theory, Childfree Content, Generation Z, Active Audience, and Social Media. The study adopts a constructivist paradigm, using a qualitative approach and Stuart Hall’s reception analysis method. Ten Generation Z informants who are active viewers of the channel were selected and interviewed in-depth. The findings reveal three audience reception positions: Dominant Hegemonic, Negotiated, and Oppositional, analyzed through four main categories. In the Dominant Hegemonic group, acceptance was found across all categories: the Menjadi Manusia YouTube channel, the Childfree by Choice content, understanding of the childfree concept, and Generation Z’s perspective on the issue. The Negotiated group showed partial acceptance in the categories of content, understanding, and perspectives on childfree. Meanwhile, the Oppositional group demonstrated rejection in those same categories. In conclusion, Generation Z's interpretations of the childfree issue are highly diverse. This research is expected to contribute to communication studies, particularly in understanding the dynamics of digital audience reception to sensitive content. It may also serve as a reference for content creators in designing more inclusive narratives that reflect audience diversity.
