Abstract

In the era of globalization, intercultural communication has become an essential skill, particularly for individuals interacting in multicultural environments. The Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program provides Indonesian students with opportunities to experience studying abroad, including at Hanyang University, South Korea. However, intercultural experiences are not without complex communication challenges. This study aims to identify the intercultural communication barriers faced by IISMA students at Hanyang University and analyze the strategies they employed to overcome these barriers. The literature review in this study includes nine previous studies relevant to the research topic. The theoretical framework encompasses topics such as intercultural communication, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, intercultural communication barriers, culture shock, stereotypes, and homesickness. This research adopts a constructivist paradigm using a case study method and a qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven research subjects, who are IISMA participants at Hanyang University, South Korea, from Batch 1 to Batch 3. The results of this study indicate that students face intercultural communication barriers, including language differences, social norms, interpretation of non-verbal communication, as well as stereotypes and prejudices that affect their adaptation process. To address these challenges, students employed adaptation strategies such as utilizing translation technology, learning basic Korean, and demonstrating respect for local culture. Keywords: Intercultural Communication, Communication Barriers, IISMA, South Korea Dalam era globalisasi, komunikasi antarbudaya menjadi sebuah keterampilan penting, terutama bagi individu yang berinteraksi dalam lingkungan multikultural. Program Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) memberikan kesempatan kepada mahasiswa Indonesia untuk merasakan pengalaman belajar di luar negeri, seperti di Hanyang University, Korea Selatan. Namun, pengalaman antarbudaya tidak lepas dari hambatan dan tantangan komunikasi yang kompleks. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengidentifikasi hambatan komunikasi antarbudaya yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa IISMA di Hanyang University serta menganalisis strategi yang mereka gunakan dalam mengatasi hambatan tersebut. Tinjauan Pustaka pada penelitian ini terdiri dari 9 penelitian terdahulu yang relevan dengan penelitian ini. Kajian teoritis yang meliputi komunikasi antarbudaya, komunikasi verbal, komunikasi non-verbal, hambatan komunikasi antarbudaya, gegar budaya, stereotip, dan homesickness. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma konstruktivisme dengan metode penelitian studi kasus dan pendekatan kualitatif, Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan melakukan wawancara mendalam kepada 7 sujek penelitian yaitu mahasiswa peserta IISMA di Hanyang University, Korea Selatan Batch 1 hingga Batch 3. Hasil penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa mahasiswa dihadapkan dengan hambatan komunikasi antarbudaya, yaitu perbedaan bahasa, norma sosial, interpretasi komunikasi non-verbal, serta stereotip dan prasangka yang memengaruhi proses adaptasi mereka. Untuk mengatasi tantangan tersebut, mahasiswa menggunakan strategi adaptasi seperti memanfaatkan teknologi penerjemah, mempelajari dasar-dasar Bahasa Korea, dan menunjukkan penghormatan terhadap budaya lokal.
