Abstract
This research examines the theme of depression representation in the film "A Man Called Otto" directed by Marc Foster (2023). In this context, representation refers to the effort to reflect social reality through implicit messages in the film's work. With the backdrop of the film's popularity as an entertainment option, this study explores how depression is portrayed in the film, particularly through its main character, Otto Anderson. Analyzing depression representation through film media, this research employs representation theory and analyzes the signs and meanings contained within it. Furthermore, the Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) theory is utilized to explore the prolonged grief response after the main character's loss. Constructivist paradigm serves as the primary analytical framework, utilizing the Charles Sanders Peirce semiotics model, specifically the Triadic theory, to identify depression representation in the film "A Man Called Otto." This study analyzes the audiovisual elements in the film to understand depression representation within its context. Based on the findings from 11 scenes, it can be concluded that the cinematic elements in the film tend to use eye-level angles to convey meanings within the scenes. The use of medium shot, medium close up, and close up aims to capture facial expressions, activities, and details within the scenes. Blue and yellow color tones are employed to enhance the film's dramatization and emphasize the tragedy experienced by the character Otto. Keyword: Representation, Depression, Semiotics, Film Penelitian ini mengangkat tema representasi depresi dalam film "A Man Called Otto" yang disutradarai oleh Marc Foster (2023).
