Abstract
This study focuses on Beef Season 1, driven by the need to explore contemporary communication regarding mental health issues, existential crises, and the pressures of modern life particularly concerning Asian-American immigrant experiences and self-identity within audiovisual media, specifically contemporary television series. The study defines the variable of "emotional conflict" as internal tension arising from mental stress that manifests in destructive behavior, while "self-identity" relates to how an individual perceives their own nature as fragmented between a flawless social image and a vulnerable emotional state. The sample consists of 45 scenes drawn from the ten episodes of Beef Season 1. Data analysis employs the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Peirce, examining meaning through a triadic relationship comprising the representamen, object, and interpretant. The findings reveal that emotional conflict is represented both visually and narratively through angry gestures, weeping, low-key lighting, and wardrobe color choices that signal depression. Meanwhile, self-identity is represented indexically and symbolically through material possessions such as vehicle types and housing—highlighting the social class disparity between blue-collar workers and the social elite. Ultimately, Beef conveys a powerful message: beneath social class differences, every individual harbors the same psychological vulnerabilities when confronted with the unrealistic demands of modern society. Keywords: representation, emotional conflict, self-identity, Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics, drama serial.
