Abstract
Romantic relationships are generally expected to provide a sense of safety, comfort, and mutual support between partners. However, in practice, interpersonal communication in romantic relationships does not always occur in a healthy and open manner. Manipulative behavior may emerge through interpersonal communication, both verbally and nonverbally, and may initially be disguised as forms of care and affection, making it difficult to recognize. This study aims to understand how individuals interpret manipulative behavior that occurs in interpersonal communication within romantic relationships, from the perspectives of both individuals who engage in and those who experience such behavior. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. This approach is used to understand the subjective experiences of informants and to organize the research findings hierarchically, beginning with first-order constructs that represent the informants’ experiences and perspectives, followed by secondorder constructs that reflect the researcher’s interpretation of the patterns identified. The subjects of this study were individuals who had experienced romantic relationships involving manipulative behavior. The research paradigm employed is constructivism, which views meaning as being constructed through individuals’ experiences and interactions with their social environment. The findings indicate that manipulative behavior in interpersonal communication within romantic relationships occurs in several forms, including silent treatment, playing victim, and love bombing, which are expressed through verbal and nonverbal communication. Informants interpreted these behaviors differently based on their positions and experiences within the relationship. For those who experienced the behavior, manipulation was interpreted as a form of communication that generated fear of losing their partner, feelings of guilt, emotional dependence, anxiety, overthinking, emotional exhaustion, and even a loss of self-identity. Meanwhile, for those who engaged in the behavior, manipulation was interpreted as a means of seeking emotional validation and attention, as well as a form of self-protection, which in the process could lead to self-reflection and regret. These experiences subsequently shaped the informants’ understanding of healthy romantic relationships as relationships built upon open communication, a sense of safety, equality, mutual respect, and the freedom to be oneself Keywords : Meaning, Manipulative Behavior, Interpersonal Communication, Romantic Relationships, Phenomenology rasa aman, nyaman, serta dukungan antara kedua belah pihak.
