Abstract
The film Uglies (2024) represents beauty not merely as a visual preference, but as an ideological system that operates as a form of social regulation shaping identity, status, and social relations. This study aims to examine how the value of conscious beauty is represented in Uglies through visual and narrative signs using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic approach. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through scene observation, film documentation, and literature review. The analysis focuses on identifying the relationship between the signifier and the signified within selected scenes that portray beauty standards, social environments, and the development of awareness experienced by the main character, Tally. The findings indicate that the Pretties environment positions beauty as a primary requirement for social acceptance, while Smoke is represented as a space of awareness that emphasizes diversity, freedom, and self-acceptance. The value of conscious beauty is shown as a gradual process formed through personal experiences, inner conflicts, and comparisons between contrasting social environments. This study concludes that Uglies offers a critical perspective on standardized beauty norms and highlights the importance of individual awareness in redefining beauty in a more humanistic and reflective manner. Keywords: Semiotics, Ferdinand de Saussure, Conscious Beauty, Uglies Film, Beauty Representation Film Uglies (2024) merepresentasikan kecantikan tidak sekadar sebagai preferensi visual, melainkan sebagai sistem ideologis yang berfungsi sebagai bentuk regulasi sosial dalam membentuk identitas, status, dan relasi sosial individu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana nilai conscious beauty direpresentasikan dalam film Uglies melalui tanda-tanda visual dan naratif dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Ferdinand de Saussure. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi adegan, dokumentasi film, dan studi pustaka. Analisis difokuskan pada identifikasi hubungan antara penanda (signifier) dan petanda (signified) dalam sejumlah scene terpilih yang menggambarkan standar kecantikan, lingkungan sosial, serta perkembangan kesadaran yang dialami oleh tokoh utama, Tally. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lingkungan Pretties memposisikan kecantikan sebagai syarat utama penerimaan sosial, sementara Smoke direpresentasikan sebagai ruang kesadaran yang menekankan keberagaman, kebebasan, dan penerimaan diri. Nilai conscious beauty dalam film ini ditampilkan sebagai proses bertahap yang terbentuk melalui pengalaman personal, konflik batin, serta perbandingan antara lingkungan sosial yang berbeda. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa film Uglies menghadirkan kritik terhadap standar kecantikan yang bersifat seragam dan menegaskan pentingnya kesadaran individu dalam memaknai kecantikan secara lebih humanis dan reflektif.
