Abstract
Corrosion is a process where metals undergo oxidation or reaction with their surrounding environment, resulting in a decline in material quality. All metals naturally experience corrosion, which is an electrochemical process. One metal that is particularly prone to oxidation is carbon steel SS400, especially when exposed to seawater. In the shipbuilding industry, SS400 steel is used for ship hull plates. This study focuses on the corrosion rate occurring in ship hulls using seawater from Merak Harbor. The research was conducted using a potentiodynamic electrochemical method with specimens sized 20 mm x 10 mm and 5 mm thick, with immersion times of 7 days, 14 days, and 21 days. Additionally, microscopic analysis was performed on the sample surfaces to obtain more detailed information. The methods used in this study are based on electrochemical techniques. The research results show that the use of protective paint layers significantly affects the reduction of corrosion rates. For specimens without a protective paint layer, the corrosion rate after 168 hours of immersion was 1.598 x 10-1 mmpy, while for specimens with three layers of protective paint, the corrosion rate was 1.056 x 10-2 mmpy, with an efficiency value of 87.30%. After 336 hours of immersion, the corrosion rate for specimens without a protective paint layer was 1.713 x 10-1 mmpy, whereas for specimens with three layers of protective paint, it was 6.496 x 10-2 mmpy, with an efficiency of 67.66%. After 504 hours of immersion, the corrosion rate for specimens without a protective paint layer was 3.007 x 10-1 mmpy, while for specimens with three layers of protective paint, it was 9.367 x 10-2 mmpy, with an efficiency of 65.89%. These results indicate that the corrosion rate of SS400 is still relatively low and the effectiveness of the applied paint layer successfully slows down the corrosion rate. Korosi adalah sebuah proses dimana logam mengalami oksidasi atau reaksi dengan lingkungan sekitarnya, mengakibatkan penurunan kualitas material. Semua logam secara alami mengalami korosi yang merupakan proses elektrokimia. Salah satu logam yang rentan teroksidasi adalah baja karbon SS400, terutama saat berada dilingkungan air laut. Dalam industri perkapalan baja SS400 digunakan pada plat body kapal. Penelitian ini memfokuskan pada laju korosi yang terjadi pada body kapal menggunakan media air laut Pelabuhan Merak. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan metode elektrokimia potensiodinamik dengan ukuran spesimen 20 mm x 10 mm dengan tebal 5 mm dengan variasi perendaman 7 hari, 14 hari, dan 21 hari. Selain itu, analisis mikroskopik dilakukan pada permukaan sampel untuk memperoleh informasi lebih rinci. Metoda yang digunakan pada penelitian ini menggunakan metoda elektrokimia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan penggunaan lapisan pelindung cat sangat berpengaruh dalam menghambat laju korosi, sebagaimana hasil laju korosi pada perendaman 168 jam spesimen yang tidak menggunakan lapisan pelindung cat sebesar 1,598 x 10-1 mmpy, sedangkan dengan waktu perendaman yang sama spesimen dengan lapisan pelindung berupa cat sebanyak 3 lapisan mendapatkan hasil laju korosi sebesar 1,056 x 10-2 mmpy dengan nilai efisiensi 87,30%. Pada perendaman 336 jam tanpa lapisan pelindung cat hasil laju korosi 1,713 x 10-1 mmpy sedangkan dengan lapisan pelindung cat 3 lapisan mendapatkan hasil laju korosi 6,496 x 10-2 mmpy dengan nilai efisiensi sebesar 67,66% dan perendaman 504 jam tanpa lapisan pelindung mendapatkan hasil 3,007 x 10-1 sedangkan spesimen menggunakan lapisan pelindung berupa cat 3 lapis mendapatkan hasil 9,367 x 10-2 dengan nilai efisiensi sebesar 65,89%. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa laju korosi SS400 masih tergolong baik dan juga efektivitas dari lapisan cat yang digunakan berhasil memperlambat laju korosi
