Abstract

This quantitative correlational research aims to examine the relationship between perfectionism and social comparison and self-esteem among Mercu Buana University students. A total of 397 student respondents who were active students at Mercu Buana University were selected using the accidental sampling method. There are 3 measuring instruments used, namely the Rosernberg self-esteem scale from Rosernberg (1965), the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale from Hewitt & Flett (1991), the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure proposed as a result of the development of Gibbons & Buunk (1999). Data were analyzed using multiple correlation techniques with the help of the SPSS version 22 program. Hypothesis test results show that there is a negative and significant relationship between perfectionism and social comparison with self-esteem in students at Mercu Buana University, both partially and simultaneously/together. . In the partial test results, perfectionism has a negative correlation with self-esteem of -0.594, which means that the higher the perfectionism, the lower the self-esteem. Meanwhile, social comparison has a negative correlation with self-esteem of -0.547, which means that the higher the social comparison, the lower the self-esteem. In the results of simultaneous testing, there is a relationship between perfectionism and social comparison with self-esteem with an R value of 0.637, indicating that the correlation coefficient level has a strong relationship. Penelitian kuantitatif korelasional ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hubungan perfeksionisme dan perbandingan sosial dengan self esteem pada mahasiswa Universitas Mercu Buana. Sebanyak 397 responden mahasiswa yang merupakan mahasiswa/i aktif di Universitas Mercu Buana dijaring menggunakan metode accidental sampling. Terdapat 3 alat ukur yang digunakan yaitu Rosernberg self esteem scale dari Rosernberg (1965), Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale dari Hewitt & Flett (1991), Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measureproposed hasil pengembangan dari Gibbons & Buunk (1999). Data dianalisis menggunakan teknik multiple korelasi dengan bantuan program SPSS versi 22. Hasil uji hipotesis menunjukan bahwa terdapat hubungan dengan arah yang negatif dan signifikan perfeksionisme dan perbandingan sosial dengan self esteem pada mahasiswa di Universitas Mercu Buana, baik secara parsial maupun secara simultan/bersama-sama. Pada hasil pengujian secara parsial, perfeksionisme berkorelasi negatif dengan self esteem sebesar - 0,594 yang artinya semakin tinggi perfeksionisme maka semakin rendah self esteem, begitupun sebaliknya. Sedangkan perbandingan sosial berkorelasi negatif dengan self esteem sebesar - 0,547 yang artinya semakin tinggi perbandingan sosial maka semakin rendah self esteem, begitupun sebaliknya. Pada hasil pengujian secara simultan, terdapat hubungan perfeksionisme dan perbandingan sosial dengan self esteem dengan perolehan nilai R sebesar 0,637, menunjukkan tingkat koefisien korelasi memiliki hubungan yang kuat.
