Abstract
The internet has become an inseparable necessity in today's life. Its presence, which offers various conveniences, on the other hand, can cause a loss of control over it, which in turn can form an addiction called Internet Addiction. Students are a group that is more vulnerable to experiencing internet addiction considering that so many students' needs are supported by the internet. One of the factors behind this relatively new phenomenon is emotion, which is related in this research to the use of emotional regulation strategies, whether adaptive (reappraisal) or maladaptive (suppression), and also the inability to verbally explain the emotions felt (alexithymia). Therefore, this study aims to examine the influence of emotional regulation and alexithymia on internet addiction. Through the Accidental Sampling technique, 204 subjects participated in this correlational quantitative research. The results show that alexithymia influences internet addiction by 27%, where based on the correlation test of emotional regulation, cognitive strategies, reappraisal and expressive suppression, it is not correlated by internet addiction because the significance is 0.178 and 0.260 (p > 0.05) and based on the regression test, alexithymia is a good predictor of internet addiction because the significance is 0.000 (p < 0.05). The mediator test was carried out as an additional test which resulted in an expressive suppression emotion regulation strategy that was frozen with internet addiction through alexithymia, where alexithymia acted as a full mediator because the significance of the direct effect was 0.183 (p > 0.05), while the significance of the direct effect was <.001 (p < 0.05). Keywords: Emotion Regulation Cognitive Reappraisal Strategy, Emotion Regulation Expressive Suppression Strategy, Alexithymia, Internet Addiction, Students Internet telah menjadi kebutuhan yang tak terpisahkan dari kehidupan saat ini. Kehadirannya yang menawarkan berbagai kemudahan, di lain sisi dapat menggiring pada kehilangan kontrol atasnya yang selanjutnya melalui hal tersebut dapat membentuk suatu adiksi yang disebut Internet Addiction. Mahasiswa menjadi golongan yang lebih rentan dalam mengalami internet addiction mengingat begitu banyaknya kebutuhan mahasiswa yang ditunjang oleh internet. Salah satu faktor dibalik adanya fenomena yang masih tergolong baru tersebut adalah emosi, di mana kaitannya dalam penelitian ini dengan penggunaan strategi regulasi emosi, apakah adaptif (reappraisal) atau maladaptif (suppression), dan juga ketidakmampuan untuk menjelaskan secara verbal emosi yang dirasakan (alexithymia). Maka dari itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh emotion regulation dan alexithymia terhadap internet addiction. Melalui teknik accidental sampling, 204 subjek berpartisipasi dalam penelitian kuantitatif korelasional ini. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa alexithymia memengaruhi internet addiction sebesar 27% di mana berdasarkan uji korelasi emotion regulation strategi cognitive reappraisal dan expressive suppression tidak berkorelasi dengan internet addiction karena signifikansi sebesar 0.178 dan 0.260 (p > 0.05) serta berdasarkan uji regresi alexithymia merupakan prediktor yang baik untuk internet addiction karena signifikansi sebesar 0.000 (p < 0.05). Uji mediator dilakukan sebagai uji tambahan yang menghasilkan emotion regulation strategi expressive suppression berkorelasi dengan internet addiction melalui alexithymia, di mana alexithymia berperan sebagai mediator penuh karena signifikansi pada direct effect sebesar 0.183 (p > 0.05), sedangkan signifikansi pada indirect effect sebesar <.001 (p < 0.05).
