Abstract

Clay shale deposits in Bojong Koneng Village, Sentul, Bogor Regency, constitute problematic geomaterials positioned between clay soil and sedimentary rock. Highly susceptible to rapid weathering (slaking) upon exposure to moisture and atmospheric changes, this material poses significant landslide hazards due to severe reductions in shear strength. This quantitative study evaluates the index properties of the Bojong Koneng clay shale to establish its physical variability and mechanical response potential. Laboratory testing was performed in compliance with ASTM and SNI protocols, measuring natural moisture content (wn), unit weight (γ), specific gravity (Gs ), Atterberg limits (LL, PL, PI), and grain size distribution via hydrometer analysis. Experimental findings indicate an average natural moisture content (wn) of 7% (ranging between 5% and 9%), a mean unit weight (γ) of 1.712 g/cm³, and an average specific gravity (Gs ) of 2.66. Atterberg consistency limits produced Liquid Limit (LL) values of 25.45%–34.81%, Plastic Limit (PL) values of 18.32%–29.04%, and Plasticity Index (PI) values of 5.77%–11.00% (average PI of 7.97%), classifying the material as low-to-medium plasticity clay. Hydrometer testing confirmed a predominant fine-grained fraction (silt and clay) with passing rates of 79.70%–85.61%. These physical characteristics demonstrate that despite a low initial natural moisture level, the high fine-particle content makes the soil vulnerable to rapid structural degradation under wetting-drying cycles. These insights provide valuable baseline data for slope stability analysis and safe infrastructure design in the region.
