Abstract

S45C steel is a medium-carbon steel widely used in engineering applications due to its good strength and wear resistance. However, this material is still susceptible to corrosion, especially in electrolyte-containing environments. One method to improve corrosion resistance is through the Quenching process. In this study, Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is used as a natural Quenching medium because it contains phenolic compounds that can potentially form a protective layer on the steel surface. This research aims to analyze the effect of CNSL Quenching on the corrosion rate of S45C steel with several treatment variations, including basic Quenching, CNSL Quenching, the addition of Al₂O₃, and Tempering. Corrosion testing is carried out using potentiodynamic polarization, Chronoamperometry, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), supported by FTIR characterization. The results indicate that the use of CNSL can reduce the corrosion rate and improve the corrosion resistance of S45C steel compared to untreated specimens. Keywords: S45C steel, CNSL, corrosion, Quenching, Tempering Baja S45C merupakan baja karbon menengah yang banyak digunakan pada bidang teknik karena memiliki kekuatan dan ketahanan aus yang baik, namun material ini masih rentan mengalami korosi terutama pada lingkungan yang mengandung elektrolit. Salah satu metode untuk meningkatkan ketahanan korosi adalah melalui proses quenching, dimana pada penelitian ini digunakan Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) sebagai media quenching alami karena mengandung senyawa fenolik yang berpotensi membentuk lapisan pelindung pada permukaan baja. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh quenching menggunakan CNSL terhadap laju korosi baja S45C dengan variasi perlakuan berupa Quenching basic, Quenching CNSL, penambahan Al₂O₃, serta tempering. Pengujian dilakukan menggunakan metode potentiodynamic polarization, Chronoamperometry, dan Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), serta karakterisasi FTIR. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan CNSL dapat menurunkan laju korosi dan meningkatkan ketahanan korosi baja S45C dibandingkan spesimen tanpa perlakuan CNSL.
