Abstract
Clay shale is a material whose physical characteristics can be influenced by moisture conditions and weathering levels; therefore, identification of its physical properties is required as initial data for geotechnical studies. This study aims to identify the physical characteristics of clay shale soil in Cijayanti Village, Babakan Madang District, Bogor Regency, based on index properties testing and to determine its classification using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The study was conducted through laboratory testing of three disturbed soil samples. The tests included water content, unit weight, specific gravity, grainsize distribution using the hydrometer method, and Atterberg limits consisting of Liquid Limit (LL), Plastic Limit (PL), and Plasticity Index (PI). The test results showed water content ranging from 10.98% to 12.17%, with an average of 11%, unit weight ranging from 1.98683 to 2.18232 g/cm³, with an average of 2.08594 g/cm³, and specific gravity ranging from 2.7076 to 2.7523, with an average of 2.733. Hydrometer analysis indicated a predominance of fine-grained fractions, with Sample 2 having the highest fine-grained content. The LL values ranged from 37.31% to 40.70%, PL values from 24.17% to 25.19%, and PI values from 13.14% to 15.51%, indicating that all samples had medium plasticity. Based on the USCS, all samples were classified as CL (Lean Clay). Based on the AASHTO classification, Samples 1 and 3 were classified as A-6, while Sample 2 was classified as A-7-6. The results indicate variations in index properties among the samples, with a predominance of fine-grained fractions and medium plasticity. The test results can serve as initial information for understanding the soil material conditions and as a consideration in geotechnical studies and construction activities at the research site. Tanah clay shale merupakan material yang karakteristik fisiknya dapat dipengaruhi oleh kondisi kadar air dan tingkat pelapukan, sehingga diperlukan identifikasi sifat fisik sebagai data awal dalam kajian geoteknik. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi karakteristik fisik tanah clay shale di Desa Cijayanti, Kecamatan Babakan Madang, Kabupaten Bogor berdasarkan pengujian index properties serta menentukan klasifikasinya menggunakan Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) dan American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Penelitian dilakukan melalui pengujian laboratorium terhadap tiga sampel tanah terganggu (disturbed sample). Pengujian meliputi kadar air, berat isi, berat jenis, distribusi ukuran butir menggunakan metode hidrometer, serta batas Atterberg yang terdiri atas Liquid Limit (LL), Plastic Limit (PL), dan Plasticity Index (PI). Hasil pengujian menunjukkan kadar air sebesar 10,98%–12,17% dengan rata-rata 11%, berat isi sebesar 1,98683–2,18232 g/cm³ dengan rata-rata 2,08594 g/cm³, dan berat jenis sebesar 2,7076–2,7523 dengan rata-rata 2,733. Analisis hidrometer menunjukkan dominasi fraksi halus, dengan Sampel 2 memiliki kandungan fraksi halus tertinggi. Nilai LL sebesar 37,31%–40,70%, PL sebesar 24,17%–25,19%, dan PI sebesar 13,14%–15,51% menunjukkan bahwa seluruh sampel memiliki plastisitas sedang. Berdasarkan USCS, seluruh sampel termasuk kelompok CL (Lean Clay). Berdasarkan AASHTO, Sampel 1 dan Sampel 3 termasuk A-6, sedangkan Sampel 2 termasuk A-7-6. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya variasi index properties antarsampel dengan dominasi fraksi halus dan plastisitas sedang. Perbedaan nilai tersebut menunjukkan adanya variasi karakteristik fisik pada sampel yang diuji. Data hasil pengujian dapat digunakan sebagai informasi awal untuk memahami kondisi material tanah dan menjadi pertimbangan dalam kajian geoteknik serta pekerjaan konstruksi di lokasi penelitian.
