Abstract
The mother and child relationship is one of the most profound forms of family relationships, encompassing emotional experiences such as sacrifice, loss, and inner conflict. However, these experiences are often less accessible to some readers because novels are primarily presented through lengthy textual narratives. Therefore, this final project designs a graphic novel adaptation entitled Hana: Jangan Biarkan Mereka Lihat Lukamu as a visual medium capable of conveying women’s emotional experiences in a more empathetic and engaging way. The design process applies the Design Thinking method, consisting of the empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test stages, with data collected through literature review, observation, and interviews with the novel’s author, Yudiati Kuniko. The adaptation employs a visual storytelling approach through illustrations, panels, color, typography, and layout to preserve the meaning and emotional depth of the original novel. The final outcome is a printed graphic novel exhibited at the Final Project Exhibition, where it received positive responses from visitors for its ability to communicate the story clearly, evoke empathy, and effectively portray women’s emotional experiences within family relationships. Keywords: graphic novel, novel adaptation, visual storytelling, mother and child relationship, women’s emotional experiences Relasi ibu dan anak merupakan salah satu bentuk hubungan keluarga yang sarat akan pengalaman emosional, seperti pengorbanan, kehilangan, dan konflik batin. Namun, penyampaian pengalaman tersebut melalui media novel sering kali kurang diminati oleh sebagian pembaca karena didominasi narasi teks yang panjang. Oleh karena itu, tugas akhir ini merancang novel grafis adaptasi berjudul Hana: Jangan Biarkan Mereka Lihat Lukamu sebagai media visual yang mampu menyampaikan pengalaman emosional perempuan secara lebih empatik dan mudah dipahami. Proses perancangan menggunakan metode Design Thinking melalui tahapan empathize, define, ideate, prototype, dan test, dengan pengumpulan data melalui studi literatur, observasi, dan wawancara bersama penulis novel, Yudiati Kuniko. Perancangan menerapkan pendekatan storytelling visual melalui ilustrasi, panel, warna, tipografi, dan tata letak untuk mempertahankan makna serta emosi dari novel asli. Hasil perancangan berupa novel grafis cetak yang dipamerkan pada pameran Tugas Akhir dan memperoleh respons positif dari pengunjung karena dinilai mampu menyampaikan cerita secara jelas, menyentuh, dan membangun empati terhadap pengalaman emosional perempuan dalam relasi keluarga.
