Abstract
Body dissatisfaction in adolescents triggers upward social comparison behavior on social media, particularly regarding appearance, which contributes to increased social appearance anxiety. This study aims to examine the role of selfcompassion as a mediator in the influence of upward social comparison on social appearance anxiety in late adolescence. This quantitative study involved adolescents aged 1821 years old who were social media users selected using an accidental sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using scales of social appearance anxiety, upward social comparison, and self-compassion. The results of the regression and mediation analysis showed that upward social comparison had a direct positive and significant effect on social appearance anxiety (B = 0.749, SE = 0.063, t (11.940), p <0.001, 95% CI (0.625-0.872). This means that the higher the level of upward social comparison, the higher the social appearance anxiety felt by adolescents. Furthermore, self-compassion was proven to act as a partial mediator in this relationship (B = 0.147, SE = 0.037, 95% CI (0.069-0.216). This shows that although self-compassion is able to filter or reduce the negative impact of upward social comparison, the direct effect of upward social comparison on increasing social appearance anxiety remains significant. Ketidakpuasan tubuh pada remaja memicu perilaku upward social comparison di media sosial, khususnya dalam aspek penampilan, yang berkontribusi pada peningkatan social appearance anxiety. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji peran self-compassion sebagai mediator dalam pengaruh upward social comparisson terhadap social appearance anxiety pada remaja akhir. Penelitian kuantitatif ini melibatkan remaja berusia 18-21 tahun pengguna media sosial yang dipilih menggunakan teknik accidental sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan menggunakan skala social appearance anxiety, upward social comparisson dan self-compassion. Hasil analisis regresi dan mediasi menunjukan bahwa upward social comparisson berpengaruh langsung secara positif dan signifikan terhadap social appearance anxiety (B =0.749, SE= 0.063, t(11.940), p<0.001, 95% CI (0.625-0.872). Artinya, semakin tinggi tingkat upward social comparisson, semakin tinggi juga kecemasan penampilan sosial yang dirasakan remaja. Selanjutnya selfcompassion terbukti berperan sebagai mediator parsial dalam hubungan tersebut (B= 0.147, SE= 0.037, 95% CI (0.069-0.216). Hal ini menunjukan bahwa meskipun self-compassion mampu menyaring atau mengurangi dampak negative perbandingan sosial ke atas, pengaruh langsung upward social comparison terhadap peningkatan social appearance anxiety tetap signifikan.
