Abstract
Negative labels and discriminatory treatment from the social environment are often directed at people with physical disabilities, which ultimately affects their body image, namely their perception and experience of their body shape and function. Hope, as a positive psychological factor, is thought to play a role in coping with the impact of stigma, which is defined as an individual's belief and ability to set goals and find ways to achieve them. This study aims to examine the role of hope as a mediating variable between social stigma and body image in people with physical disabilities in Jakarta. The participants in this study were 241 individuals aged 20-40 years with physical disabilities who live or work in Jakarta. Data collection was conducted using the Body Image Scale (BIS), Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness (SSCI-8), and Adult Hope Scale (AHS). The results revealed that hope proved to play a partial mediating role in helping individuals reduce the impact of internalized stigma, thereby improving body image to be more positive. However, hope was not the main psychological mechanism in minimizing the impact of social stigma on the body image of individuals with physical disabilities. Social stigma remains a strong factor in the formation of negative body image among individuals with physical disabilities. These findings indicate that strengthening an inclusive environment is an important step in minimizing negative stigma. Keyword: body image, social stigma, hope, physical disability, mediation Label negatif dan perlakuan diskriminatif dari lingkungan sosial sering ditujukan kepada penyandang disabilitas fisik yang pada akhirnya mempengaruhi body image individu, yakni persepsi dan pengalaman individu terhadap bentuk dan fungsi tubuhnya. Hope sebagai salah satu faktor psikologi positif diduga berperan dalam menghadapi dampak stigma, yang didefinisikan sebagai keyakinan dan kemampuan individu dalam menetapkan tujuan dan mencari cara untuk mencapainya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji peran hope sebagai variabel mediator antara stigma sosial dan body image pada penyandang disabilitas fisik di Jakata. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini merupakan 241 individu berusia 20-40 Tahun dengan disabilitas fisik yang tinggal atau berkegiatan di Jakarta. Pengumpulan data dilakukan menggunakan Body Image Scale (BIS), Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness (SSCI-8), dan Adult Hope Scale (AHS). Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa hope terbukti berperan sebagai mediator parsial yang membantu individu untuk mengurangi dampak internalisasi stigma sehingga meningkatkan body image menjadi lebih positif, meskipun begitu hope bukan menjadi mekanisme psikologis utama dalam meminimalisir dampak stigma sosial terhadap body image individu penyandang disabilitas fisik. Stigma sosial masih menjadi faktor yang kuat dalam terbentuknya body image negatif pada individu disabilitas fisik. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa penguatan lingkungan yang inklusif menjadi langkah penting dalam meminimalkan stigma negatif. Kata Kunci: body image, stigma sosial, hope, disabilitas fisik, mediasi
