Abstract

This study aims to analyze the typification of victims’ reactions to catcalling among early adolescents at MTsN 13 Jakarta Selatan and to interpret catcalling as an issue of communication and power relations in social interaction. The variables examined include the experience of catcalling as a form of verbal and non-verbal harassment, the reactions of early adolescent victims, and the symbolic power relations embedded in such incidents. In this study, catcalling is defined as unwanted communication in the form of verbal expressions, gestures, or physical behaviors with sexual nuances that position the victim in a subordinate role. Early adolescence refers to individuals aged 14-15 years who are in the psychosocial developmental stage of identity versus role confusion. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through indepth interviews with eight students who had experienced catcalling. The data analysis method used was descriptive qualitative analysis with a typification technique to categorize patterns of reactions based on shared characteristics in the victims’ experiences. The findings indicate that the forms of catcalling experienced include verbal, non-verbal, and physical actions, with perpetrators ranging from peers and unknown adults to individuals within the school environment, including female perpetrators. Victims’ feelings varied from fear and shame to neutral and ambivalent responses. The reactions were classified into three main typifications: avoidance and suppression, resistance and rejection, and expression and validation seeking. In conclusion, catcalling continues to occur among early adolescents, even within a religious school environment, and reflects communication problems and power relations that influence the development of victims’ identities. Keywords: Catcalling, Early Adolescents, Victims’ Reactions, Typification, Power Relations.
