Abstract

Pile foundations subjected to lateral loads play a crucial role in structural design, especially for constructions exposed to horizontal forces such as wind, earthquakes, and water currents. This study aims to compare the lateral response of piles using two distinct analytical approaches: the LPILE program, which utilizes nonlinear finite element analysis, and the Broms method, a classical analytical technique. The research involves modeling single piles under various soil conditions, including cohesive and granular soils, with variations in pile length and diameter. Key parameters analyzed include lateral deflection, maximum bending moment, and load distribution along the pile shaft. The results indicate that LPILE provides more detailed and realistic outcomes due to its ability to account for nonlinear soil– structure interaction and layered soil profiles. In contrast, the Broms method yields more conservative estimates by simplifying soil conditions as homogeneous and linear. Significant differences were observed in deflection and bending moment values, particularly in soft soil scenarios and longer piles. While the Broms method remains useful for preliminary design and conservative assessment, LPILE is recommended for comprehensive analysis when detailed geotechnical data is available. This study is expected to guide engineers in selecting appropriate analysis methods based on project complexity and data availability, ultimately improving the accuracy and reliability of pile foundation design under lateral loading. Fondasi tiang yang menerima beban lateral merupakan elemen penting dalam desain struktur, terutama pada konstruksi yang terpapar gaya horizontal seperti angin, gempa, dan arus air. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan respons gaya lateral tiang menggunakan dua pendekatan analisis yang berbeda, yaitu program LPILE sebagai metode numerik berbasis analisis elemen hingga dan metode Broms sebagai pendekatan analitis klasik. Studi dilakukan dengan memodelkan tiang tunggal pada berbagai kondisi tanah, termasuk tanah kohesif dan tanah granular, serta variasi panjang dan diameter tiang. Parameter yang dianalisis meliputi defleksi lateral, momen lentur maksimum, dan distribusi gaya sepanjang tiang. Hasil simulasi menunjukkan bahwa LPILE mampu memberikan hasil yang lebih rinci dan realistis karena mempertimbangkan interaksi nonlinier antara tanah dan struktur, serta profil tanah berlapis. Sebaliknya, metode Broms memberikan hasil yang lebih konservatif dan cenderung menyederhanakan kondisi tanah sebagai homogen. Perbedaan signifikan ditemukan pada nilai defleksi dan momen lentur, terutama pada kondisi tanah lunak dan tiang panjang. Meskipun metode Broms masih relevan untuk estimasi awal dan desain konservatif, LPILE lebih direkomendasikan untuk analisis mendalam dengan data geoteknik yang lengkap. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan panduan bagi para insinyur dalam memilih metode analisis yang sesuai berdasarkan kompleksitas proyek dan ketersediaan data tanah, serta meningkatkan akurasi dalam perencanaan fondasi tiang yang menerima beban lateral.
