Abstract

The condition of a broken home is often associated with various psychosocial problems among adolescents, including issues related to communication and social relationships. This study aims to examine and understand the communication patterns of adolescents from broken home families in building social relationships in Cengkareng District in 2025. The focus of this research is on how the experience of living in a broken home influences adolescents’ interpersonal communication and the adaptive processes they develop in their social lives. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth, face-to-face interviews with five adolescent informants from broken home families residing in Cengkareng District. Each interview lasted approximately 15 minutes, was audio-recorded, and transcribed to ensure data accuracy. The data were analyzed thematically by linking empirical findings with concepts of interpersonal communication, adolescent development, broken home families, and social relationships. The findings indicate that the broken home condition affects adolescents’ communication, particularly within the family context, as reflected in decreased openness, trust, and emotional closeness. However, this study also finds that adolescents from broken home families do not experience overall communication failure. Instead, they tend to shift their interpersonal communication needs to social relationships outside the family, especially with peers who are perceived as more supportive. This process leads to the formation of adaptive communication patterns characterized by selectivity, cautiousness, and the ability to adjust communication according to social context and emotional conditions The conclusion of this study shows that adolescents from broken home families have the capacity to adapt and develop functional communication patterns in their social relationships. These adaptive communication patterns are formed through the interaction between family experiences, adolescents’ emotional development, and social support. This study is expected to contribute academically to the field of interpersonal communication studies and practically serve as a reference for parents, educators, and society in understanding the communication dynamics of adolescents from broken home families. Keywords: Communication Patterns, Adolescents, Broken Homes, Social Relationships Kondisi keluarga broken home sering kali dikaitkan dengan berbagai permasalahan psikososial pada remaja, termasuk dalam aspek komunikasi dan relasi sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan memahami pola komunikasi remaja broken home dalam membangun relasi sosial di Kecamatan Cengkareng pada tahun 2025. Fokus penelitian diarahkan pada bagaimana pengalaman remaja yang mengalami broken home dapat melakukan komunikasi interpersonal serta proses adaptasi yang mereka lakukan dalam kehidupan sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam secara tatap muka terhadap lima informan remaja broken home yang berdomisili di Kecamatan Cengkareng. Wawancara dilakukan dengan durasi rata-rata 15 menit, direkam, dan ditranskrip untuk menjaga keakuratan data. Data dianalisis secara tematik dengan mengaitkan temuan lapangan dengan konsep komunikasi interpersonal, karakteristik perkembangan remaja, keluarga broken home, dan relasi sosial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kondisi broken home mempengaruhi komunikasi remaja, terutama dalam konteks keluarga, yang ditandai dengan menurunnya keterbukaan, kepercayaan, dan kedekatan emosional. Namun, penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa remaja broken home tidak mengalami kegagalan komunikasi secara menyeluruh. Remaja cenderung mengalihkan kebutuhan komunikasi interpersonal ke relasi sosial di luar keluarga, terutama teman sebaya yang dianggap lebih suportif. Proses ini mendorong terbentuknya pola komunikasi adaptif yang ditandai dengan sikap selektif, kehati-hatian, dan kemampuan menyesuaikan komunikasi dengan konteks sosial dan kondisi emosional. Kesimpulan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa remaja broken home memiliki kapasitas untuk beradaptasi dan membangun pola komunikasi yang fungsional dalam relasi sosial. Pola komunikasi adaptif terbentuk melalui interaksi antara pengalaman keluarga, perkembangan emosi remaja, serta dukungan relasi sosial. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi akademis dalam kajian komunikasi interpersonal serta menjadi rujukan praktis bagi orang tua, pendidik, dan masyarakat dalam memahami dinamika komunikasi remaja broken home.
