Abstract

Parental expectations of children often occur within families. One form of parental expectation messages is reflected through various media, including popular culture such as film. This study aims to analyze parental expectation messages in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research employed a qualitative method with a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected by selecting seven key scenes that depict parent–child interactions, which were then analyzed through Barthes’ three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings show that parental expectations are constructed through verbal, nonverbal, and cultural Batak symbols, emphasizing the values of hasangapon (honor), hagabeon (descendants), and hamoraon (wealth). In conclusion, the parental expectation messages in this film are not neutral, but rather ideological constructions considered natural within Batak culture, while also generating resistance from the younger generation toward parental traditional values. Keywords: Semiotics, Roland Barthes, Parental Expectations, Film, Batak Culture Ekspektasi yang tinggi dari orang tua terhadap anak seringkali terjadi dalam sebuah keluarga. Salah satu bentuk pesan ekspektasi orang tua terhadap anak tercermin melalui berbagai medium, termasuk media populer seperti film. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pesan ekspektasi orang tua terhadap anak dalam film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap melalui pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivis. Data dikumpulkan dengan menyeleksi tujuh adegan utama yang menampilkan interaksi orang tua dan anak, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan tiga level makna Barthes: denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pesan ekspektasi orang tua dikonstruksi melalui tanda verbal, nonverbal, dan simbol budaya Batak, yang menekankan nilai hasangapon (kehormatan), hagabeon (keturunan), dan hamoraon (kekayaan). Kesimpulannya, pesan ekspektasi dalam film ini bukanlah makna yang netral, melainkan konstruksi ideologis yang dianggap wajar dalam budaya Batak, namun juga memunculkan resistensi dari generasi muda terhadap nilai tradisional orang tua.
