Abstract
Open-pit coal mining results in the exposure of rock layers in the ground that contain sulfur. This sulfur reacts with oxygen and contaminates water, leading to the formation of wastewater with a high acid content. Additionally, soil erosion and mining activities cause the release of soil and rock particles carried by wastewater, resulting in wastewater with a high sludge content. It is important for mine operators to manage wastewater by preparing wastewater treatment facilities to improve the quality of the wastewater. In this study, wastewater management is conducted using the settling pond method. The research employs a quantitative method to analyze the effectiveness of the settling pond in managing wastewater and improving its quality. This analysis includes the analysis of the wastewater management process, an analysis of the settling pond's capacity, and and an analysis of the success of wastewater quality control in reducing sediment levels and improving wastewater pH. The results of the evaluation of the suitability of the settling pond capacity for the daily wastewater volume indicate the need to reduce the volume of pumped wastewater entering the pond during heavy rain, as high rainfall causes an increase in the volume of rainwater runoff entering the settling pond. However, under nonrainy conditions and moderate rain, the settling pond is still capable of accommodating the volume of pumped wastewater along with the volume of rainwater runoff optimally Analisis pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa settling pond berhasil mengendapkan kadar lumpur sampai dengan 85,79 persen dengan rata-rata nilai kadar TSS yang melewati proses pengendapan yaitu 119,79 mg/liter, hal ini dikarenakan pengaruh desain aliran air pada settling pond aliran air limbah dapat diperlambat sehingga lumpur dapat mengendap secara optimal dan terjebak pada sediment pond. Pengelolaan pH air limbah pada settling pond berhasil menaikan pH air limbah sampai dengan 85,2 persen dengan rata-rata nilai pH air limbah yang setelah proses pengapuran yaitu 6,76. Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa hasil mutu air limbah yang telah dikelola telah memenuhi standar baku mutu berdasarkan Peraturan Daerah Provinsi Kalimantan Timur Nomor 02 Tahun 2011 sehingga metode settling pond efektif untuk mengelola air limbah tambang batubara.
