Abstract

This study aims to understand the marital satisfaction of wives serving sentences at Pondok Bambu Detention Center in Jakarta. Using the theoretical framework of Olson & Fowers (1993), which includes communication, shared activities, conflict resolution, financial management, sexual orientation, relationships with family and friends, and childcare, this study employed a qualitative, phenomenological approach. The subjects were four wives serving sentences who were still married to their legal husbands. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews and source triangulation. The results showed differences in the level of marital satisfaction among each subject, influenced by the quality of communication, husband's support, and family involvement. Subjects NS, BD, and MD felt satisfied because they continued to receive emotional support, regular communication, and commitment from their husbands, while subject FN experienced dissatisfaction due to the lack of emotional and financial support. This study also found that wives continued to try to maintain communication via telephone and video calls, but marital satisfaction was still largely determined by the husband's response, consistency, and commitment. Thus, this study confirms that, despite limited circumstances, marital satisfaction can be maintained through effective communication, emotional support, and family involvement, thus maintaining marital bonds despite challenging circumstances. Keywords: Marital Satisfaction, Wives Serving Sentences Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami gambaran kepuasan pernikahan pada istri yang menjalani masa hukuman di Rutan Pondok Bambu Jakarta. Menggunakan kerangka teori Olson & Fowers (1993) meliputi komunikasi, aktivitas bersama, resolusi konflik, manajemen keuangan, orientasi seksual, hubungan dengan keluarga dan teman, serta pengasuhan anak. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan fenomenologis. Subjek penelitian berjumlah empat orang istri yang menjalani masa hukuman dan masih memiliki suami sah. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam dan triangulasi sumber. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya perbedaan tingkat kepuasan pernikahan pada masing-masing subjek yang dipengaruhi oleh kualitas komunikasi, dukungan suami, serta keterlibatan keluarga. Subjek NS, BD, dan MD merasa puas karena tetap memperoleh dukungan emosional, komunikasi rutin, dan komitmen dari suami, sedangkan subjek FN mengalami ketidakpuasan akibat ketiadaan dukungan emosional maupun finansial. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa istri tetap berusaha untuk tetap berkomunikasi melalui telepon maupun video call, namun kepuasan pernikahan tetap sangat ditentukan oleh respon, konsistensi, dan komitmen dari pihak suami. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa meskipun berada dalam kondisi terbatas, kepuasan pernikahan dapat terpelihara melalui komunikasi yang efektif, dukungan emosional, serta keterlibatan keluarga, sehingga ikatan pernikahan tetap terjaga meskipun menghadapi situasi penuh tantangan.
