Abstract
This study is motivated by the complexity of live broadcast production and Metro TV’s commitment to delivering high-quality programming through the show Kontroversi. It requires a deep understanding of technical and editorial roles to maintain quality and credibility in a real-time pro-con debate format. The aim of this research is to identify and analyze the production strategies of Metro TV’s Kontroversi, focusing on planning, execution, and evaluation mechanisms. The theoretical framework incorporates Shoemaker & Vos’s gatekeeping theory to map content selection and filtration processes, Yusanto & Esfandari’s television production framework dividing activities into pre-production, production, and postproduction phases, along with broadcasting regulations and the characteristics of television media. This study adopts a constructivist paradigm with Robert K. Yin’s case study method. The research subjects are three key informants: two Kontroversi producers and one Metro TV executive producer. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and internal documentation. Data analysis followed Miles & Huberman’s model of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, reinforced by source triangulation to ensure validity and credibility. Findings reveal that pre-production involves routine editorial meetings, digital discussions for theme finalization, comprehensive research, and A1–A3 guest backup mechanisms. The production phase relies on runners and co-runners as execution points, intercom coordination, cut-and-extend strategies for live flexibility, and a “show must go on” contingency plan. In post-production, the team conducts informal evaluations, handles honorarium administration, archives digitally in Dalet, and repackages content for multiplatform distribution, establishing a continuous improvement cycle. Keywords: television production; production strategy; metro tv; case study; Kontroversi Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi kompleksitas produksi siaran langsung dan komitmen Metro TV dalam menyajikan Kontroversi sebagai debat pro-kontra berkualitas. Untuk itu diperlukan pemahaman mendalam tentang peran teknis dan editorial guna menjaga kredibilitas siaran real time. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis strategi produksi Kontroversi Metro TV, khususnya mekanisme perencanaan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasinya. Landasan teori yang digunakan mencakup gatekeeping Shoemaker & Vos untuk proses seleksi konten, kerangka produksi televisi Yusanto & Esfandari yang membagi pra-produksi, produksi, dan pasca-produksi, serta regulasi penyiaran dan karakteristik media televisi. Penelitian ini menerapkan paradigma konstruktivisme dengan metode studi kasus menurut Robert K. Yin. Subjeknya tiga informan kunci: dua produser Kontroversi dan seorang eksekutif produser Metro TV. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi langsung, dan dokumentasi internal. Analisis data dilakukan dengan reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan menurut Miles & Huberman, lalu diperkuat triangulasi sumber untuk validitas dan kredibilitas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pra-produksi meliputi rapat editorial rutin, diskusi digital finalisasi tema, riset komprehensif, dan mekanisme backup narasumber. Fase produksi mengandalkan runner–co-runner, intercom koordinasi, strategi cut-and-extend, dan contingency plan “show must go on.” Pada pascaproduksi, tim melakukan evaluasi informal, administrasi honorarium, pengarsipan digital di Dalet, serta pengemasan ulang untuk multiplatform, membentuk siklus perbaikan berkelanjutan.
