Abstract

Masculinity in popular media, especially the One Piece Live Action adaptation, depicts the character of Roronoa Zoro as a masculine figure with a strong, assertive, loyal, and principled image. Media plays an important role in shaping the social construction of gender identity, and films often serve as a means of reproducing the image of hegemonic masculinity that is widely accepted by society. This study aims to examine the representation of masculinity in the character of Roronoa Zoro in One Piece Live Action using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis. The theory used in this study is Peirce's semiotics to analyze signs, objects, and interpretants that appear in selected scenes, and relate them to the seven areas of masculinity according to Janet Saltzman Chafetz. The method used is qualitative research with a descriptive-interpretive approach. Primary data were obtained through observations of six dominant scenes of Zoro in One Piece Live Action, while secondary data came from literature and previous research. The analysis was carried out by classifying signs into the categories of qualisign, sinsign, legisign; icon, index, symbol; and rheme, dicisign, and argument. The results of this study indicate that Zoro's masculinity is represented through physical strength, fighting skills, steadfastness of principle, loyalty, and emotional control. Qualisigns are evident in his sturdy physique and assertive expression, sinsigns in scenes of duels and rejection of enemies, and legisigns in the symbol of the three swords and the code of honor. Icons are present in the visual resemblance to the ideal warrior, indices in wounds and gestures of courage, and symbols in the swords and challenging gaze. Viewers interpret Zoro as a hegemonic masculine figure who is physically and morally strong, thus reinforcing the image of the ideal male in popular culture. Maskulinitas dalam media populer, khususnya film adaptasi One Piece Live Action, yang menampilkan karakter Roronoa Zoro sebagai sosok maskulin dengan citra kuat, tegas, loyal, dan berprinsip. Media memiliki peran penting dalam membentuk konstruksi sosial tentang identitas gender, dan film sering kali menjadi sarana reproduksi citra maskulinitas hegemonik yang diterima secara luas oleh masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji representasi maskulinitas pada karakter Roronoa Zoro dalam One Piece Live Action dengan menggunakan analisis semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini semiotika Peirce untuk menganalisis tanda (sign), objek (object), dan interpretan (interpretant) yang muncul dalam adegan-adegan terpilih, serta mengaitkannya dengan tujuh area maskulinitas menurut Janet Saltzman Chafetz. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif-interpretatif. Data primer diperoleh melalui observasi terhadap enam adegan dominan Zoro dalam One Piece Live Action, sedangkan data sekunder berasal dari literatur dan penelitian terdahulu. Analisis dilakukan dengan mengklasifikasikan tanda ke dalam kategori qualisign, sinsign, legisign; ikon, indeks, simbol; serta rheme, dicisign, dan argument. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa maskulinitas Zoro direpresentasikan melalui kekuatan fisik, keterampilan bertarung, keteguhan prinsip, loyalitas, dan pengendalian emosi. Qualisign tampak pada fisik tegap dan ekspresi tegas, sinsign pada adegan duel dan penolakan terhadap musuh, legisign pada simbol tiga pedang dan kode kehormatan. Ikon hadir pada keserupaan visual dengan pendekar ideal, indeks pada luka dan gestur keberanian, sedangkan simbol pada pedang dan tatapan tantangan. Penonton menafsirkan (interpretant) Zoro sebagai figur maskulin hegemonik yang kuat secara fisik dan moral, sehingga mempertegas citra laki-laki ideal dalam konstruksi budaya populer.
