Abstract

Fenomena cancel culture menjadi isu penting dalam percakapan publik di media sosial, termasuk platform X. Salah satu akun yang sering mengangkat topik ini adalah @tanyakanrl, sebuah autobase yang mempublikasikan kiriman anonim dari pengikutnya. Cuitan mengenai pembatalan figur publik kerap memicu respons emosional, baik dukungan maupun penolakan. Fenomena ini penting dikaji karena memperlihatkan bagaimana khalayak memaknai pesan yang sarat nilai moral, etika, dan isu sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis pemaknaan pengikut akun @tanyakanrl terhadap konten cancel culture, menggunakan teori encodingdecoding Stuart Hall. Akun @tanyakanrl diposisikan sebagai encoder pesan, sementara pengikutnya berperan sebagai decoder yang menafsirkan pesan sesuai pengalaman dan nilai pribadi masing-masing. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan paradigma konstruktivis. Data primer diperoleh dari wawancara mendalam dengan tujuh pengikut aktif akun @tanyakanrl, sedangkan data sekunder diambil dari literatur, jurnal, berita daring, dan arsip media sosial. Keabsahan data diuji dengan triangulasi sumber, dan analisis dilakukan melalui reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan proses encoding akun @tanyakanrl efektif memanfaatkan karakteristik media sosial X yang cepat dan masif, dengan pesan visual dan verbal yang informatif, interaktif, serta kontekstual. Proses decoding menghasilkan tiga posisi: Hegemoni dominan, menerima penuh pesan pembatalan sebagai kontrol sosial; Negosiasi, menerima sebagian namun menyesuaikan dengan nilai dan konteks pribadi; dan Oposisi, menolak pesan karena dianggap tidak adil. Posisi negosiasi mendominasi, menegaskan bahwa khalayak bersifat aktif dan kritis, bukan penerima pasif pesan media. The phenomenon of cancel culture has become an important issue in public discourse on social media, including the X platform. One account that frequently raises this topic is @tanyakanrl, an autobase that publishes anonymous submissions from its pengikut. Tweets discussing the cancellation of public figures often trigger emotional responses, both in support and opposition. This phenomenon is important to study as it reveals how audiences interpret messages laden with moral values, ethics, and social issues. This study aims to analyze how pengikut of the @tanyakanrl account interpret cancel culture content, using Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding theory. The @tanyakanrl account is positioned as the message encoder, while its pengikut act as decoders who interpret the message based on their individual experiences and personal values. The research method applied is descriptive qualitative with a constructivist paradigm. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews with seven active pengikut of @tanyakanrl, while secondary data was collected from literature, journals, online news, and social media archives. Data validity was ensured using source triangulation, and analysis was conducted through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that @tanyakanrl’s encoding process effectively leverages the fast-paced and massive nature of the X platform, delivering informative, interactive, and contextual messages through both visual and verbal elements. The decoding process resulted in three positions: Dominant-hegemonic, where messages are fully accepted as a form of social control; Negotiated, where messages are partially accepted but adapted to personal values and context; and Oppositional, where messages are rejected as being potentially unjust. The negotiated position predominated, affirming that audiences are active and critical participants rather than passive receivers of media messages.
