Abstract
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon: Season 1 is part of The Walking Dead franchise, set in a post-apocalyptic world located in France. The story centers on Daryl Dixon, who becomes stranded and attempts to return to America but ends up helping a boy named Laurent, believed to be humanity’s new hope. The series not only presents battles with zombies but also constructs a world shaped by media representations that appear more real than reality itself—what is referred to as hyperreality. This study aims to analyze the representation of signs and symbols of hyperreality in the series using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, which distinguishes between denotative, connotative, and myth meanings. Additionally, Jean Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality and simulacra is employed to explain how reality in the series is constructed through illusion and simulation. The research method used is qualitative with a semiotic approach and a critical paradigm, allowing the researcher to examine ideological elements and social constructions within the visual narrative. Data was collected through observation of key scenes from six episodes that exhibit elements of hyperreality. The results show a strong presence of hyperreality in the series, such as evolved zombies, children surviving alone, and a main character portrayed as nearly superhuman. Elements of mise en scène further reinforce the illusion of this fictional reality. From an ideological perspective, the series also reflects existentialist values, emphasizing individual freedom in determining the meaning of life amidst an uncertain and absurd world. Cerita berpusat pada Daryl Dixon yang terdampar dan berusaha kembali ke Amerika, namun dalam perjalanannya harus membantu seorang anak bernama Laurent yang diyakini sebagai harapan umat manusia. Serial ini tidak hanya menyajikan pertarungan dengan zombi, tetapi juga menampilkan dunia yang dibentuk melalui konstruksi media yang tampak lebih nyata dari kenyataan, atau yang disebut sebagai hiperrealitas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi tanda dan simbol hiperrealitas dalam serial tersebut dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes, yang membedakan makna denotatif, konotatif, dan mitos. Selain itu, teori hiperrealitas dan simulacra dari Jean Baudrillard digunakan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana realitas dalam serial dibangun melalui ilusi dan simulasi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan semiotika dan paradigma kritis, yang memungkinkan peneliti menelaah unsur ideologis dan konstruksi sosial dalam narasi visual. Data diperoleh melalui observasi terhadap adegan-adegan kunci dari enam episode yang menunjukkan unsur hiperrealitas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa serial ini memuat representasi kuat hiperrealitas, seperti zombi berevolusi, anak-anak yang bertahan hidup sendiri, serta tokoh utama yang digambarkan hampir seperti pahlawan super. Elemen mise en scène memperkuat ilusi realitas tersebut. Dari sisi ideologi, serial ini juga mencerminkan nilai-nilai eksistensialisme yang menekankan kebebasan individu dalam menentukan makna hidup di tengah dunia yang tidak pasti.
