Abstract
The profession of journalism in modern society plays a very important role in various aspects of life, socially, politically, and culturally. The film Richard Jewell (2019) provides an illustration of the impact that can be caused by journalistic activities by the profession of journalists. This film shows the character Richard Jewell, whose reputation can easily be elevated to a hero and then altered into a criminal by news written by journalists. The purpose of this study is to determine the denotation, connotation, and myth meanings regarding the representation of the journalist profession through signs and meanings in the film. The film is examined using Roland Barthes' model of semiotic analysis. This study uses a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative content research type to see and understand the meaning of social reality towards a phenomenon. The results of the semiotic text analysis found that the film "Richard Jewell" shows the profession of journalism as a profession that can determine a person's reputation in the eyes of the public. The representation of journalists is found in several supporting characters who play a role in interview activities and news coverage, and then found in the antagonist character with an attitude and traits that tend to be sensationalist and do not consider the aspects of journalistic ethics. Keywords : Semiotic, Film, Richard Jewell, Profession, Journalism Profesi jurnalis dalam masyarakat modern mengambil peran yang sangat penting dalam berbagai aspek kehidupan secara sosial, politik, maupun budaya. Film Richard Jewell (2019) memberi gambaran mengenai dampak yang dapat ditimbulkan dari aktivitas jurnalistik oleh profesi jurnalis. Film ini memperlihatkan tokoh Richard Jewell yang reputasinya dapat dengan mudah diangkat menjadi pahlawan dan diubah menjadi pelaku kejahatan oleh berita yang ditulis jurnalis. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui makna denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos mengenai representasi profesi jurnalis melalui tanda dan makna pada film tersebut. Film dikaji menggunakan analisis semiotika model Roland Barthes. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma konstruktivis dengan jenis penelitian isi kualitatif untuk melihat dan memahami makna realitas sosial terhadap suatu fenomena. Hasil dari analisis teks semiotika ditemukan bahwa film Richard Jewell menunjukkan profesi jurnalis adalah profesi yang dapat menentukan reputasi seseorang di mata publik. Representasi jurnalis ditemukan pada beberapa karakter pendukung yang berperan dalam kegiatan wawancara dan peliputan berita, kemudian ditemukan pada karakter antagonis dari sikap dan sifat tokoh yang memiki kecenderungan sensasionalis dan tidak memikirkan aspek etika jurnalistik.
