Abstract

This study is to determine how the pattern of communication is established between parents and children living in boarding houses in overseas areas of Grogol, West Jakarta. This research uses several concepts and theories, namely communication patterns, family communication and parent and child relationship schemes. The method used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews with resource persons, observation. The results showed that there were challenges that occurred to the three parents who were the resource persons. In the case of Tri Evani (Vani), Dean, and Iryani, their communication patterns with parents reflect both the consensual type and the pluralistic type as described by Fitzpatrick (1988). Vani and Iryani adopt a consensual type, upholding family values. Dean and his parents use a pluralistic type. When related to the communication style between children and parents according to Urea in Sujiwo (2022), there are assertive and non-assertive styles shown by the three communicators, namely Iryani who applies an assertive style or open to parents, while Dean and Vani tend to use a non-assertive style because they close themselves to what happens overseas. Keywords : Communication Pattern, Parent, Child, Overseas Penelitian ini untuk mengetahui bagaimana pola komunikasi yang terjalin antara orangtua dan anak yang tinggal di kos dalam perantauan daerah Grogol, Jakarta Barat. Penelitian ini menggunakan beberapa konsep dan teori yaitu pola komunikasi, komunikasi keluarga dan skema hubungan orangtua dan anak. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam kepada narasumber, observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya tantangan yang terjadi kepada tiga orang tua yang menjadi narasumber. Dalam kasus Tri Evani (Vani), Dean, dan Iryani, pola komunikasi mereka dengan orang tua mencerminkan tipe konsensual dan tipe pluralistis seperti yang dijelaskan oleh Fitzpatrick (1988). Vani dan Iryani mengadopsi tipe konsensual, menjunjung nilai-nilai keluarga. Dean dan orang tuanya menggunakan tipe pluralistis. Apabila dikaitkan dengan gaya komunikasi antar anak dan orangtua menurut Urea dalam Sujiwo (2022), tedapat gaya assertive dan non-assertive yang ditunjukkan ketiga komunikator yaitu Iryani yang menerapkan gaya assertive atau terbuka terhadap orang tua, sedangkan Dean dan Vani cenderung menggunakan gaya non-assertive karena menutup diri terhadap apa yang terjadi di perantauan.
